Engine oil viscosity

Unread post by Raul »

Hi

About 50000 miles back I changed the clutch of my car( berlingo 2,0 hdi). Lately I noticed that the clutch has started to slip. When I changed the engine oil last time I noticed that the sump was a little bit oily near the area where gearbox meets the engine. I did not change the crankshaft oil seal when I did the clutch. I have started to use 5w30w engine oil about 15000 back from now and I started to think could it be that the low viscosity engine oil is the reason why the crankshaft seal started to leak. I am going to do the clutch job again and this time I will also change the crank seal but should I also change the engine oil for a higher viscosity( for example 10w40w ) or is it only about the bad seal.

If the seal is leaking, It will leak with whatever engine oil you put in. And if you are changing a clutch it is not much more work to do at same time

Can I continue to use the 5w30w if I change the oil seal? It is a high quality oil and I just made the oil change.

Thanks. Looks like I can continue with the currently used oil.

Which type of crankshaft oil seal would you use. An original which has a spring loaded lip seal or some newer type of seals which are without the spring. Also, what about the crankshaft to flywheel bolts. Should they be renewed and used with a loctite.
