2014 508: Permanent ESP/ABS Lights After Losing Traction.

Post by 508Allure »

Hi all,

2014 508 2.0 HDI 163 Auto

Family member exited an uphill junction in the wet, which caused a little wheel spin, triggered the ESP and then the dash lit up like a Christmas tree.

Fortuitously they have my Autel scanner with them whilst visiting other relations, so they have read the codes.

Car drives starts/drives fine but some of the codes won't clear. Battery is a year old and topped up every couple of weeks or so but it was disconnected last night, charged again and reconnected with a BSI reset this morning.

The ECU and ABS codes had disappeared but returned after a brief drive, during which ABS, ESP and numerous other warnings reappeared during the drive, although the ECU code is now intermittent instead of permanent.

The car is scanned every couple of weeks and has never had an ECU code and is generally code free.

Codes:

ECU:
P0215 Intermittent (was permanent earlier) Main Relay: Poor operation of the relay, the ECU is not being supplied as it should be.

ABS:
C1385 Intermittent Fault in electro valves supply voltage.

BSI:
B1606 81 Present Battery state of charge configuration fault.

Some other BSI codes, which I suspect are spurious plus various codes on other modules including ABS, Sat Nav/Audio, High Beam Assistant, Right Hand Wiper Motor and Engine Wiring Housing BSM_2010 to name but a few.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Your BSI fault code is because the battery charge status unit needs time to check the battery health and this can take over 6 hours. So possibly frequent disconnections are not allowing the BCSU to do its job and inform the BSI.

Your P0215 concerns the engine ECU Principal Relay:
Fault Code: P0215
Description of Fault: Incorrect operation of the relay, the engine management ECU does not have the correct power supply.
Engine ECU still supplied for 1s despite a request for cutting of its supply. Loss of supply of the engine ECU for 1s without a prior request being detected, due to an incorrect value memorised at the following wake-up.
Conditions for Fault to clear: Driving with the engine hot for 5 minutes
Downgrade Modes whilst Fault is active: None Listed
Symptoms: Starting problem
Suspect Areas:
  • Electrical harness
  • Connectors
  • Principal relay
So if you are doing a BSI reset all the time, it is important to make sure that sufficient time is allowed for the ECUs (especially the Engine ECU) to undertake memorisation of values after the engine is switched off and before the battery is discvonnected.

So make sure if you have to disconnect the battery that you follow at least the times in the procedure below:

BSI Reset / Battery Disconnect / Reconnect Procedure

If it is not this, then you may well have a faulty relay....

Hi Marc,

Thank you very much for your input, especially the BSI procedure as I had not seen one before for a keyless equipped car. Only one BSI reset has been carried out over the weekend in the hope of clearing the codes but I don't think the car was left for 6 hours or so after it was completed.

I pointed them to the ABS fuse on top of the battery, which was corroded, so that has been changed and the ABS/ESP lights have disappeared but they are still getting a massage about the electric handbrake, although this works manually.

A scan of the car is showing even more codes now, including 15 on the BSI and now a transmission code.

Would you suggest another BSI reset following the exact timings in the one you provided or might this be an issue with the electrics on top of the battery, given the ABS fuse was corroded?

Thank you again.

Ok, so be aware that any issue with the ABS / ESP ECU will affect the handbrake and all associated features of the system, like hill start assist, automatic application and release of the handbrake, cruise control / limiter functions, dynamic emergency braking, etc. etc. so this can be a bit daunting with all these messages / warnings.

What we need is all the fault codes clearing, going for a drive and then re-scanning the vehicle and reporting all those fault codes that remain.

Then pop them up here and we can try to help.

I will get them to do that but I do know the vast majority won't clear. Will report back.

So another BSI reset carried out following your guide and exact timings but the doors would not lock from either the key or keyless handles, although he did say the various lights extinguished as if it was locked.

The BSI reset hasn't helped as the exact same codes are present and will not clear, and they have now been joined by another code as the engine refused to start for the first time but did start 10 minutes later.

ECU: (all intermittent but won't clear)
P0513
U1209
P0215

BSI: (all intermittent except one but won't clear)
B180E 87
B1808 87
B1168 15
B1169 15
B1606 81 (present)
B1816 87
B1818 1C
U1809 81
U1F2E 87
B132F 81

Codes on other modules such as right front wiper, hands free unit, high beam assistant, battery state of charge unit, parking assist, TPMS, airbags and pretentioners, engine wiring housing and dynamic headlamp height adjuster.

I was hoping the replacement of the corroded ABS fuse might have fixed the rest but obviously not. ABS/ESP lights and warning message are now off and the handbrake is now working automatically but the module still has 4 codes that won't clear.

As stated in a previous message the car is generally code free.

So I have managed to clear all but one of the 25 or so codes by clearing them individually and the one that is permanent and refuses to clear is the following:

B1606 81 Battery State of Charge (SOC) Unit - Configuration Fault.

I believe this is the device that connects to negative pole of the battery but I'm not sure if this code suggests it is faulty or it's an issue with the battery info stored in the ECU.

The reason I question the ecu battery info is due to having looked at the live values of the SOC where the battery type is listed as GEL when it's fitted with lead acid (no stop/start). The original battery was a 70Ah lead acid and it was replaced just over a year ago with another lead acid but 75Ah due to it having a higher CCA. 70Ah is obviously still shown under the SOC values as I have no way of changing this but might this and the wrong battery type value be the issue, albeit a year after the battery was fitted. As mentioned previously, the car is scanned every couple of weeks and is normally code free.

The other value of note was calibration of the wake up threshold of the battery, which shows as deactivated.

Any ideas based on the above, can the SOC be configured or is it likely faulty?

Thanks in advance.

Ok, so the BCSU (Battery Charge Status Unit) may need to be configured with the correct battery type fitted. This is done with Diagbox. For your vehicle it was fitted with a:

Level 3 Enhanced Flooded Battery: EF-L3 720A-70AH.

So these batteries should always be replaced with the same type of battery technology and never a 'Normal' battery.

Thanks for your reply, Marc.

I assumed the battery we replaced was a normal battery as I don't recall identifying anything on the original that suggested it was anything but a standard lead acid. The replacement was suggested on the Tayna website after inputting the registration, so we just went with that.

Wouldn't a configuration issue have raised its ugly head over a year ago or is it likely something that could appear over tim? We would rather not replace a healthy year old battery but we will if that's required.

Thanks again for your input.

The reason I mention this is that for Stop Start vehicles (which I've just checked and your 508 isn't equipped with it) have a special enhanced battery and using a normal battery will quickly knacker it.

The BCSU it generally configured for the correct battery type / level so the system charges it correctly according to the type and capacity fitted and monitors the correct stats for the correct battery. If replacing like for like or a battery with the same output / capacity then it will be fine.

Would you try disconecting the battery cross the battery leads , cold reset , it worked on a couple of my cars . But as a disclaimer id speak to someone who has another view on this idea. DONT just go try it till your certain.

Are you suggesting disconnecting the battery and then short it or reversing the polarity..........neither a good idea especially the latter on a newer car

Disconect then short the leads, id say it is depending on vechile age , it did work for me 06 206cc. But as i said i dont reckonmend just doing it without having anyone else doing this with good results
