Firmware Update Error after trying to update firmware - NAC

Post by findmak »

I have tried to update the software for the latest update using the Citroen update for a C3 2019 Edition:
21.08.87.32_NAC-r1

I downloaded this update and it get's 1/3 of the way on the update screen then brings up the error:

Firmware Update Error.

Remove USB stick

And goes to the blue screen of system has limited functionality when I remove the USB stick. I have tried 6-7 times and it seems to do this each time.
I tried with a few different USB sticks as well.
I have downloaded a fresh copy each time from the citroen website.
I have tried with the following sticks: 64gb usb stick (formatted to fat32), 32b usb stick and a 4gb usb stick.

I tried a BSI reset but that has not helped.

I tried to go one version back as well but it gives me the same error after a while.

I hooked up the diagbox and it gives me the errors:
Error in communication between the telematic and independent telematic unit,
Malfunction touch screen ECU (Voltage outside range)
BSI error: Fault no communication with telematic ECU

Any ideas what I should do as it is stuck on the blue screen with heater fan on?

Can you post up your VIN for me (automasked on post submission) so I can check the correct version.

You cannot mix the versions of firmware for different vehicles and versions of the NAC Head Units - it will cause errors, but I'll have a better idea of what you should have - when you provide the C4 Picasso VIN which I assume is what you are trying to update.

Ok, so I checked and can confirm you have the correct versions, sorry I couldn't get back sooner - it slipped my mind after I got caught up with a few other things over the last week - I've had to replace my iPhone 4 times!

Maps 20.0.0-r0
Firmware: 21.08.87.32_NAC-r1

So it is normal to get the blue screen with limited functionality when it is updating - are you sure you are not getting these messages?

If something else, then I suggest you take it directly to Citroen. Your vehicle is still under manufacturer's warranty.

DO NOT tell them you have connected it up to a diagnostic or provide any faults - or they may use this as a reason to decline any repairs. They do specify that this is for dealer diagnostics only.

I suggest you book it in and tell them you have been trying to update the system software and / or maps unsuccessfully and are getting the relevant error screens. Leave it to them to deal with the issues. It won't cost you anything ad the telematics are under warranty. They will perform their own guided diagnostics and depending on the results may end up replacing the head unit and or the screen, depending on the outcome of the tests.

Thanks Marc,
Took the car into the dealership as advised, they couldn't fix it so kept it in for a week and had to replace the unit. Thanks your your advice.

When I got the car back the reverse camera no longer has any gridlines, just the reverse image and the picture of the little car on the right, they said that it is due to the software update, but wanted to confirm if that was correct or is there a way to activate the gridlines?

I can't verify that of course, but it sounds like a cop out.

The system should have the lines, otherwise you have no idea how far the vehicle is visually.
rear vision.PNG
Typically and on my vehicle, the blue vertical lines represent the vehicle width with the mirrors unfolded. The horizontal blue lines represent 1 and 2 metre distances. The important Red horizontal line represents in my case 30 CM from the bumper - and this line is essential for gauging where to stop!

So I can't accept that otherwise it renders the system pretty useless and not for the intended purpose.

I would tell them you are not happy with this as you have no way to gauge the distance properly and ask them to refer this back to head office as you are left with a system not fit for purpose and not as detailed in the owners manual.

Yes and if you don't have any luck, call Citroen Head Office. They may try and fob you off saying you need to contact the dealer (frustrating I know), but just explain you are not happy with the excuse they have provided / don't believe what you have been told. They have access to technical backup and resources in France, so should be able to get the issue resolved.

Sometimes after a firmware update, it may need the configuration checking manually, or the update applying again, as this can be a cause of missing features after an update and why Citroen always state to check configuration manually after an automatic update.

Finally spoke to the dealership they said they will email the headunit manufacturer in Germany to see if it comes with the new units or not.
Let's see what they come back with.

All reversing cameras to my knowledge come with the guide lines which are used to calibrate the camera when fitted. Without these there is no way to gauge distance from an object as you cannot see anything to indicate distance from camera / bumper. It's obvious they have not done something correctly or checked the update was applied correctly so that the ECU is aware of the reversing camera (apart from the video input).

My guess is whether the Head unit ECU needs notifying again of the correct type of parking assistance fitted ( Rear sensors only, front and rear sensors or front / rear sensors and rear Video camera). If any one of these options is not set correctly in the Head Unit or BSI configuration after a firmware update, then it can affect the system.

On some PSA vehicles there is a parameter in the parking assistance ECU called "Presence of the parking manoeuvre assistance function" that in addition to the semi-automatic parking functions. So maybe worth getting them to check this./ Major firmware updates are known to cause some issues.

I had a response from my dealer who said that the headunit manufacturer has confirmed the guidelines are no longer in the latest release.
I rang another dealer and they seem to be saying the same thing that in the new C3 they are selling the guidelines are not shown.

Well that's a real disappointment and a totally stupid idea. Obviously cutting costs again it seems as there's less involved in calibrating the camera and with less to do when updating the software.

I will have to make some other checks on this as these are still showing on the latest facelifted C3 Aircross manual that has connected NAV.....

I have the same software version as you and the lines are working perfectly on mine - so it's not the firmware update that is doing it. Unless they have supplied a different Head Unit.....

...I've just checked and the C3 has a different replacement unit than the Aircross, so looks like the replacement unit is a cut down version.
