Driver folding wing mirror

Unread post by MadAxeMan »

I got in my car this morning and the drivers folding wing mirror only half open and not fully open. I can manually push it to where it needs to be but then when I lock the car it doesn't fold back like the other one it just stay to where I put it manually I've tried holding the button down to manually relink them and nothing has changed any help would be great thanks

These can become unsynchronised between the mechanical position and the memorised electronic position, especially if the mirror has been physically moved out of position (knocked) for example.

1) Move the mirror manually (by hand) all the way in (closed) and then all the way back to open position.
2) Use the remote fob or with the engine running, use the internal electric mirror control to deploy and fold the mirrors 5-10 times. This should reset them.

Can you hear any motor noise from the mirror that won't close? If not, then you may have an electrical issue with the wiring.

Remove the rubber grommet that protects the wires as they go from the lower A Pillar frame through into the door. This is a weak point where the door is opened and closed and can weaken or break the wiring. Check the wire sleeves to see if there are any breaks or splits.

If you can't see any damage here, then you may need to hook it up for a diagnostic.

I'm assuming the internal control also is not closing or opening the mirror?

You can try a BSI reset, but you may need a new mirror unit if you can't find a wiring fault.

It did do a loud click like it popped back into position and fully closed like the other but when opening it only opened half way again. No wire damage and yes there is a motor noise

Ok, so if you don't have any success after a while of opening and closing, it may be an internal issue with the plastic gearing (cogs partly worn at some position), so may need a replacement, or live with them as they are. You can disable the folding operation altogether and leave them deployed if you want - that will save you having to keep opening the one mirror manually each time.
