Funny mini exhaust pipe at front of Xantia Hdi

Post by sprout »

There is a small ehhaust pipe at the front of my 1999 Xantia Hdi Exclusive. What is it?
Last night coming home from work, when I switched the engine off this was running for about 1 1/2 minutes after.
It was hot gasses coming from the pipe and sounded like a mini jet plane!
Can someone advise please, what it is and when/how it should operate.
Regards

Congratulations! You have discovered why the Hdi was so much more expensive than the 2.1 indirect diesel. It has a diesel-driven heater unit to compensate for the fact that the engine is so efficent, that it doen't supply enough heat for the heating system on cold days!

yes that will be the webasto heater then,as far as im aware the only xantias that have them are the exclusive models like yours, they are more widley fitted to cars in colder countries.it is totaly normal for it to run on for about 1 1/2 minutes after you switch it off this is so it can do a kind of cool down purge cycle.just dont be alarmed if you see 'smoke' coming from under the bonnet on a cold morning after you park.
