Please forgive me if it's a stupid question, but would it be possible to, for example, mate the 6-speed gearbox from a late-00's 2.0hdi to a 1.6hdi from the same period? I was wondering because I find the roar of the engine at 120kph (75mph) on continental motorways to be a tad bothersome.
Thanks in advance and be gentle, please.

We will try. Have you looked to see if any 1.6 models were fitted with 6 spd gearboxes? Try looking in other market areas outside yours. Sometimes, just sometimes, a specific market gets a hi spec with low capacity engines to meet local regulations. Might take a bit of googling but worth a go to identify potential fitments. If I find anything I will post it up here. cheers

The problem is that the engine ECU knows the engine speed and road speed, and it is factory-configured with the gearbox ratios. If the engine ECU detects the wrong gear ratios while driving, it will throw a fault code, disable cruise control, and may in some circumstances go into limp mode.

Would top gear be much different anyway? 6-speed may well just have a lower 1st and closer ratios.
BTW - manual or automatic?

Only 5 Speed boxes were ever fitted to the manual C5 X7 1.6 Engines. The ratios are completely different compared to the ML6 6 Speed gearboxes throughout the entire ranges, so not advisable. There's a reason they match the gearboxes to the power units in the vehicles.
