5008 Alternator

Unread post by Steve Walsh »

Hi all you clever folk,

Working on a mates 5008. VF3**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff].
Alternator not charging, my mate bought a replacement from a breakers, Looked identical apart from it had a solid pulley, so I swapped overun pulley from original alternator.
It now charges but on Diagbox I get 2 codes
U1400
U1401
Alternator LIN NET,

I have checked all the wiring and all seems ok.
Would this be a Alternator fault or wiring fault, I am wondering if it is not compatable.

Any thoughts welcome

Steve

Definitely looks like an alternator issue or the wiring - they have to be right ones for the vehicle. The LIN is the Local Interconnect Network that connects up low priority ECUs on a serial network. So it's not communicating with the engine ECU.
Fault Code: U1400
Description of Fault: Alternator LIN network: Registering of a fault on the LIN network. Faults in communication between ECUs on the LIN.
Conditions for Fault to clear: Driving for 5 minutes
Downgrade Modes whilst Fault is active:
Symptoms: Jerking/stalling, Starting problem, Lack of power
Suspect Areas:
  • Engine ECU
  • LIN network
  • Alternator

Fault U1401: Ditto as above, but for: Alternator LIN network : Registering of a fault on the slave node of the alternator LIN network.

I've changed alternator with refurbished Valeo model on 1.6 BlueHDI 88kw S&S and have only error U1400 in OBD but nothing in the dashboard.
My old Valeo alternator (9810527180 OEM code) have same COM plug with one pin and if unplug it charge is always 14.3
What things can i check? Try a BSI reset can remove that error?

The LIN (Local Interconnect Network) may not like the alternator - these are often specific to the technology on the vehicle, especially for Stop & Start vehicles, so if you have the incorrect one, expect issues. Here is the fault code analysis for you.
Fault Code: U1400 01
Description of Fault: LIN: Electrical fault. Electrical fault on the LIN network.

Conditions of activation of the diagnostics:
At least one of the following conditions must be fulfilled:
- Ignition on
- Engine running
Conditions for Fault to clear:
  • At least one of the following conditions must be fulfilled
    - After switching the ignition off and then back on
    - When driving
Downgrade Modes whilst Fault is active:
  • Deactivation of the alternator voltage regulation
  • Deactivation of the estimation of the alternator torque
  • Deactivation of the network current estimation
  • Reconfiguration inhibiting calculation of the dispersion of the alternator voltage
  • Deactivation of "Neutral" mode
  • No central voltage maintaining device support during the first start
  • Switching on of the warning lamp and/or warning message: "STOP" warning lamp, "Stop and Start" warning lamp
Symptoms:
  • Engine hesitating, cutting out
  • Starting problem
Suspect Areas:
  • LIN
  • Engine management ECU
  • Alternator
  • Free wheel pulley
  • Alternator support
  • Electrical harness
  • Connectors
