Discontinued airbag module/ECU

Post by JohnMuppet »

Hi everyone!

I am sort of in a desperate situation. Earlier this year my van (2007 jumper/relay 2.2hdi) failed the MOT due to the airbag lights being illuminated. My local garage was unable to connect to the ECU and diagnose the problem, so I decided to do some diagnosing myself.

Eventually I was able to locate the airbag ECU and noticed severe corrosion on the unit. Tested the unit, and it was completely dead.
Got my hand on a second hand unit (with matching numbers 1356791080), plugged it in and the one light is now flashing and the "airbag failure" message appears on the screen.

My local bodyshop told me that I needed to get the new unit cloned, so that it appears as the original ECU. I then got the unit cloned and refitted, but nothing changed.

I took the van to the dealer who then performed a diagnosis (which they refused to give me a copy of btw!) but couldn't find anything useful...

I decided to get my hands on Diagbox and hooked it up to the van, and everything points to the ECU. I tried to perform a proxi alignment, but it failed. I am waiting on my s.1279 adapter, but I don't know if that will make any difference.

Called the dealer and asked them about a new replacement part, but according to them the ECU model fitted in my vehicle is discontinued and they can't replace it. The knobhead then told me that the van is basically unrepairable

In sheer disbelief I decided to try my luck with Fiat. They confirmed that the part has been discontinued, but was unsure about whether they could replace it with a successor model. They have now sent an inquiry to Italy and I am awaiting their response.

Have anyone of you had this experience with the airbag ECU and/or a discontinued part?

Is it possible to replace the ECU with a second hand one, and does it need coding, cloning, proxi alignment etc.?

I am in desperate need of help. I don't want to give up on my van just yet!

Thanks in advance!

Unfortunately we're seeing this on more and more cars where they are no longer keeping stocks of older parts. They say they are only obligated to keep spares for 5 years after the end of production - so this may be why.

Or BBA Reman who work with a lot of these ECU types and can rebuild / refurbish them: note they refer to the Airbag module as an SRS ECU.

Forgot about them too, thanks for the reminder - and there's a discount for members as well.

Thank you so much for all the tips!
I will definitely look into those companies. Hopefully they accept orders from outside the UK!

Think I might scour the scrapyards and the internet and stack up on more second hand units, and hopefully get one of them to work.
