Firmware/Map update advice needed

Post by admiral51 »

Hi All

Vehicle is a Citroen C4 2010 vin in my sig.
I have no issues with the current set up, just want to update the maps and to do that i need to update the firmware and have read the posts about FW 2.86 causing issues.
I think from reading other posts that there is a FW 2.86b which addresses the issue of the Bluetooth echo in FW 2.86.

Current system info

Unit Reference 9667019180
CD Number 6321
SW Version. - unit RNEG2.05.C.11

Maps show as United Kingdom NAVTEQ 2009/2010 2ed

I do have a Lexia but not that competent with it so was thinking can i upgrade the FW in instalments if the CD's are still available from Citroen?

Diagbox has nothing to do with the actual updating of the RT6 Firmware or maps Colin. Firmware updates are supplied separately and can be ordered on CD from the dealer (the recommended way) for a few £s.

The issue is that V2.86 is a major update and depending on the version you are coming from may cause loss of configuration after it is applied. Where this happens, the Head Unit ECU can be left in secure mode, meaning Diagbox cannot be used to reconfigure the unit to restore loss of functionality. This often necessitates a dealer visit to get it rectified and that will be a cost in diagnostic time.

My advice is to leave it well alone if it is working.

However looking at your starting firmware of 2.05, this is the base or initial version of the firmware that was installed at factory for the C4 II which is CAN2010. Although you should be able to go to version 2.21 of the firmware without losing configuration, V2.21 is not available as it was only installed at the factory on later units, so that is not an option! The only version now available from Citroen is the latest 2.86 version and that will cause configuration problems almost 100% going from your V2.05.

So if you really do want it updated (say to get the navigation postcode search ability that I think was only available from V2.21) I would suggest you ask the dealer to do the update. Then if it goes toes up, they will have to rectify it! Just make sure that you evidence that the unit is working (switching screens, audio sources and that the parking assistance if fitted is working, and the navigation is working etc. Make sure you show them this, so they can't come back and say the unit is faulty. So take a quick video of the screens outside the dealership and the screens working. It may cost you the CD of about £8 if they don't already have it and about an hour of diagnostic time to install it for you and then apply the bluetooth calibration file if necessary.

Thanks Marc
I was thinking that would be the way to go but just needed to get some professional advice :)
Had a quick look at the map updates, they are free to download but do i need to pay a fee to activate them, cannot make sense of the info i have read.

Ok, so maps are easier - these can be bought and user-installed at leisure, but the firmware is a bit more serious as it has to be done properly.

For these RT6 systems, firmware updates are the pits. So I do advise getting it done at the dealer as they are in a position and obligated to get it back to you as you handed it to them - and that is why you are paying the dealer to do it for you. If it was any other system, I'd say here's the firmware off you go - but not on these awful (IMO) RT6 units.

It's a simple matter for them - they should have training - but I would approach it from the aspect of "I need my firmware updated in order to get the Postcode search facility working". They will only have the 2.86 version available - so they'll apply that. Leave it at that - but don't get into the issues we've discussed here - just let them do the job.

Is there any chance that a firmware update would allow the RT6 unit to display "now playing" -data when listening to bluetooth audio?

No, the bluetooth profile does not support / allow this data and a firmware upgrade won't fix it.

Both Bluetooth devices (Phone and RT6 for example) need to support the appropriate Bluetooth Profiles.

The RT6 supports both A2DP / AVRCP Bluetooth profiles. However, as you can see below, there are various implementations of the AVRCP profile and the RT6 may not support the 1.3 or higher versions needed. You can see V1.4 provides support for 'now playing'.

Versions of AVRCP Profile:
1.0: Basic remote control commands (play/pause/stop, etc.)[5]
1.3: all of 1.0 plus metadata and media-player state support[6]
  • The status of the music source (playing, stopped, etc.)
  • Metadata information on the track itself (artist, track name, etc.).
1.4: all of 1.3 plus media browsing capabilities for multiple media players[7]
  • Browsing and manipulation of multiple players
  • Browsing of media metadata per media player, including a "Now Playing" list
  • Basic search capabilities
  • Support for Absolute volume
1.5: all of 1.4 plus specification corrections and clarifications to absolute volume control, browsing and other features
1.6: all of 1.5 plus browsing data and track information[9][10]
  • Number of items that are in a folder without downloading the list
  • Support for transmitting cover arts through the BIP over OBEX protocol.

Marc i am going to ask a favour sorry :(
Vin in my sig for my C4 but is there a way to try a factory reset on my head unit as it has decided to do what the C5 did, allow phones to be connected and dial out/receive calls but i cannot hear anything nor can i be heard on the other end.
I have yet to get the software updated but just looking at simple DIY fixes before i go down the replacement head unit route like i did with my C5 albeit different head unit.

Hi Colin

What version of the firmware do you have currently? The latest is 2.86 and if you have that version, it likely needs a bluetooth echo calibration undertaking.

And your sure the unit firmware hasn't been updated?

Start car, press SETUP button for about 3 seconds, then select 'radio-telephone diagnosis', then select 'Unit Description' and let me know what it says.

The firmware you currently have is critical in deciding which is a 'safer' version to upgrade to that may avoid some configuration issues.

This sudden onset of Bluetooth issues can occur if the smart phone has had its software updated recently, but the head unit hasn't, so may be an issue with the Bluetooth protocol used that can often be updated on the handset.

Right, so that is the first firmware version out - so donkeys out of date. This also means that updating it carries some risks with the user data files and and the vehicle configuration.

I have updated some of the guide to cover Mira Scripts regarding this issue, for those replacing the internal SD card after a failure of the unit. This facilitates the extraction of the specific data files stored on the SD card that also contains the vehicle configuration. It allows you copy that data to a USB key, then store it safely on your PC, so that after updating to a later firmware, you should be able to use the programme to copy these important files back again without loss of system functionality.

See the reference to the added Mirascript sections in my post here:
