There can be a few causes:

Battery voltage, the "shift lock" mechanism itself, the selector lever position switch, the gearbox ECU or electrical wiring.

Here's how to unlock it manually if the need arises:
AM6 Shift Lock A.PNG
Carefully unclip the surround bezel with a trim removal tool.
AM6 Shift Lock B.PNG
Unlock the "shift lock" with the aid of a screwdriver - Press on (2) in the direction of the arrow. Move the selector lever to disengage it from the "P" position.

So keep a screwdriver handy in the glovebox just in case it gets worse. You may find the mechanism is a bit worn on investigation.

Hi Mark.
My partners car is doing exactly the same thing. Did you ever find out what the problem was?
Thanks in advance
