Hi all,
The fun continues with our 407.
Just today the car began to stall when stopping at junctions. For the most part, I was able to stick it in "Park", start the engine again and move on, but then in traffic it cut out again, displaying a red oil can icon and making a terrible electro-mechanical sound until I switched off the ignition. It then refused to start, making the same noise. We sat with the hazards on for a few minutes, and eventually I was able to get it started again and nurse it home, stalling a few times for the remainder of the journey.
I wonder which oil the light is referring to, and whether it's a true fault or the electrics. The car drives fine when it's not throwing errors.
This is all following on from this thread, where I was having a different issue which seemed largely fixed after having the fuel filter and regen fluid replaced, followed by a system reset:

I have yet to replace the fuse box (I've been away for a month), but I'm hesitant to spend £240 if it's more likely the gearbox at fault - which at £1800 + fitting for a recon unit is basically a write off for me.
What do you guys think?

If the Oil light comes on with the STOP lamp, the handbook indicates:
This indicates that the engine oil pressure is too low.
It is linked with the STOP warning light. Stop immediately if it is displayed while the engine is running.
In the case of a lack of oil in the lubrication circuit, top up the oil.
Contact a PEUGEOT dealer as soon as possible.

I checked the oil level today; it's about three quarters up towards the upper mark on the stick.GiveMeABreak wrote: 22 Aug 2021, 00:33 If the Oil light comes on with the STOP lamp, the handbook indicates:

Can you just confirm if you mean that the oil warming lamp is coming on when the engine is actually running & not just coming on as the engine cuts out?
The reason i ask is I very often find a lot of confusion with this symptom & people often tell me the oil light is coming on & engine cutting out. It usually turns out to be a red herring as it’s completely normal for the oil light to come on as the engine cuts out (for any reason) as no engine running = no oil pressure .

It's as it's cutting out - at first it flashed on and off quickly, then stayed on when it started making this awful buzzing noise.wheeler wrote: 23 Aug 2021, 09:49 Can you just confirm if you mean that the oil warming lamp is coming on when the engine is actually running & not just coming on as the engine cuts out?

One thing that might be worth considering is to use an engine flush, followed by an oil change. I am wondering if somehow something has got 'sludged' up, causing a blockage or restriction of oil flow. A decent engine flush fluid can break down any sludge, but needs to then be emptied out, as it will cause damage (to seals and so on) if left in too long. You get the engine warmed up, add the flush (through the oil filler point), keep the engine running (typically for 10-15 minutes, but check the instructions), and then do an oil change.

Is it still making the mechanical noises when the engine is running?
If so I would suspect that you may have a serious problem, maybe with the transmission or torque convertor.

No, it drives fine when it's not cutting out, which makes me think it's an electrical thing.xantia_v6 wrote: 23 Aug 2021, 10:42 Is it still making the mechanical noises when the engine is running?
