2006 Partner 1.6HDi seatbelt warning glitch with wipers

Unread post by pondweed »

Hello all
I've been on the Berlingo M59 Forum but as the cars get older, the forum members leave and move on!
I've had a seat belt warning come on, on return from hols. 1.5 hours of it.... siren ramping up through three levels of pain.
I've worked out so far that:
1. the driver belt seems to be circuit complete when unplugged and open circuit when plugged in. I have nothing to compare it to.
2. When I do the system reboot, when I turn the sidelights on when battery reconnected/all doors shut, the rear wiper sweeps once. Everything else works.
3. The fault occurs as plugging in the drivers belt is not recognised at any time now EXCEPT when front wipers are turned on in any form. Then the operation goes back to normal until wipers stop.

I'm concerned that this may potentially not get through an MOT! Can any one give any pointers for checking beyond me cleaning all fuses under bonnet and in the dash fuse box. I've also done the earths in the engine bay, cleaned plenums on both side, and checked for wiring cuts. All fine although their was a lot of leaves in the bulkhead area on both sides.
Thanks all...

Sounds like an electrical gremlin because the wipers seem to affect it. It could be an issue with wiper circuit?
It can be turned off using Diagbox (specific PSA diagnostic software). There is a list on here somewhere that shows where members are that have the kit. I've turned both mine off as I do frequent shunts on private land and it was doing my head in so I hate to think what an hour and a half felt like....

Notice the BX is still top the list but sadly gone

thanks - I'm wondering what that (turning off) does for the new harder MOT test in UK? It seems odd that whilst this isn't a safety issue but a driver alert, its a RED dash warning which is now a 'major'...
I'm now wondering whether some of the mist of the silicone spray that was freeing up my stiff steering has resulted in someone inside the COM2000 unit. I wonder if I can hairdrier into/around it.

I think most of these cannot be deactivated on newer vehicles - for obvious reasons... but @pondweed: pop your VIN up for me (automasked on post submission) and I'll check the trigger for these.

Ok, so I don't have a lot on these given the year and the complexity of all the versions, but given that there is communication with the control unit under the steering wheel with the airbag ECU and the multiplexed wiring between that and the BSI, it's possibly an issue somewhere there or that the control unit under the steering wheel may be faulty.

Your best bet is to get Planet / Diagbox on it and see what it comes up with.

thanks indeed. I've tried to make contact with some near West Sussex/Hants border... shout if you know anyone!
(I thought I'd solved things with a hot air drier on the Comm2000 for a while, but it gradually started re-occuring.)

Have a look at our list of members who have offered help - if you haven't already:

At the end of the list is a link to a Google Map, showing the members' geographic locations and details. Just use the Private Message or Email links on the member's profile to contact anyone suitable.

List of Lexia / Diagbox Owners with Kits Offering Help

Bear in mind, although we update the list as often as we can, not all members are active on the Forum all the time, so it may take a while for a reply - and please remember current lockdown restrictions may make this difficult at present.

Im pretty sure this wont be an MOT failure.
Also if the system was disabled by programming how would the tester know this system was even fitted?

Of course, I have to say we don't condone any disabling of safety systems here whatsoever, so always better to try and get to the cause of the issue.

I agree it would be best to sort this & i will try & have a look at a wiring diagram to try to figure out the connection between the warning & the wipers as i really cant think at the moment why the would be linked. But again im not aware that its even a legal requirement to have this system?
If you get acess to diagbox/Lexia id have a look at live data on the com2000 & see if the BSI is seeing all the positions of the switches correctly.
If you then turn the wipers back on again later does the warning stop again?

Thanks both. If I do have to go to a stealer, what will the charge likely be for just getting the palm reading?
Latest experimentation;hot air on to comms area (all plastic panels are off) seemed to stop the problem. Hairdryer seemed to support this.
Then re-occurred!
With NO wipers, the siren mainly stops after the ramping and three minutes. Dash icon stays lit. Sometimes it gets 'caught' (by some fluctuating current or earth?) and goes to its quietest setting again and the cycle restarts.
With wipers on any setting, the warning immediately stops, but the cycle starts as soon as the mechanism stops.
I'm wondering where the earths to check in the dash area are. Does anything earth onto the steering shaft?

I've had a quick look at a diagram & it looks like a fairly simple circuit. Pin 2 of the seat belt plug goes straight to earth & pin 1 goes to pin 37 of the 40 way white connector on the BSI.
If it was me the first thing i would do is run a new wire from the BSI to the seatbelt connector to rule out an intermittent issue with the signal wire.

Thanks Wheeler.
So if I unplug the seat plug, pin 2 will beep when continuity established with other tester terminal to body?
And splice something into emergence from pin 37 to the pin 1 on the plug.

I suppose I can check that earth too. It is odd that the functions revert to normal when the wipers somehow affect the existing circuit 'positively' (i.e. make it work again!).

Hi all, has a solution been found for this yet?
I have similar problems on my 06 partner 1.6diesel, No wipers , seatbelt warning on, handbrake warning on, indicators work sometimes . Checked all earth's all to no avail ! Bci is £350 so obviously can't afford that if it doesn't cure it.
