C4 purchase advice needed on what to look out for please

Post by admiral51 »

Hi all
I am looking at replacing my Xantia for a C4.
I had a 1.4 petrol 05 plate ( soo slow ) in the past but looking at something a bit more modern and has some get up and go.
I have a couple i am looking at but have no idea on any possible known issues to look out for so going to post a couple of links and putting myself in your safe hands.

1. 2.0 HDi Exclusive

2. 1.6 HDi

Both are actually the same price £2995 yet to find out the service history regarding Cambelt etc on the 1.6 HDi
Going to be using it as a daily driver circa 15k miles a year and to be honest Sat Nav/Bluetooth not a must have but torn between the pair of them and not gone to see them yet.

Hi Colin, this is very much a personal view. For me it is a no brainer, I'd have the 2010 car every time. My 3 main reasons are 1, significantly less mileage over a longer period so it has not been worked so hard. 2 It has had the cam belt and pump changed and will go another 50+k before needing it again and 3 the panoramic roof and leather interior win hands down for me. There you are, no technical reason because you will get better economy from the 1.6 but the 2.0 will work less hard and therefore properly maintained as it has been will probably outlast the 1.6. My case rests m'lud :-D

For me too the 2.0 is the no brainer choice, the main reason apart from the much lower mileage is that its not a DV6 engine which I personally wouldn't touch as i find the 2.0 in general much less problematic.

Unless you can be absolutely certain that the 1.6 has been maintained meticulously and at less that the prescribed service intervals, I would give it a wide berth.
The 1.6's are known to have serious and expensive problems as a result of Citroen prescribing far to great a service interval and problems with the retention brackets for the injectors - that are not subject to inspection at service intervals.

Thanks for the replies, it makes me feel better knowing that info as i was leaning towards to 2.0 due to having had a 1.6HDi C5 X7 and currently run a C5 X7 2.0 HDi.

Any known issues on that year C4 with its equipment level that would need careful inspection?
I know it is not mega money but £3k is stretching my budget so any known issues to look out for would be good to know, hopefully not a steering rack issue that i was aware of when we took our son to buy the C5 we now own :)

Ditto this from me - the 2.0 engine wins hands down for me every time.

If you can get me the VIN over ASAP - I can get you the factory options and kit it has over to you in advance. Just ask the dealer for it as you are checking some info out.

The link does show the number plate, and it has not been obscured. Might that do for the details?

@ Wheeler - thanks for that.
@ Colin: I'll send you a PDF to your email Colin for some bedtime reading.

If it's the RT6 - it's a reasonable unit and the last of this type before they went over to the touchscreen SMEG units and after that onto the Connected Touchscreen integrated systems. Put it this way, you can still get maps for them - which has to be a bonus :-D
