Citroen C5 Gear Selection Cables — part number request

Post by jamescarruthers »

Hello again. My poor sister has had another issue with her 2001 2.2 manual C5!

It has always had a very occasional pop out of 1st gear and she said that this got worse and then stopped selecting gears. She managed to nurse it home in 1st gear after some persuasion.

I am suspecting that it might need new gear selection cables— I understand from a brief read on here that there are two. Or, if she (me!) is lucky, just the cable set up or reattached.

Can someone kindly provide me with the part number and the diagram for these? Also, is there a removal/installation and set up procedure which details how to change them and set them up right?

VIN: VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff]

Oh, and which gearbox has this car got too, please?! ML5T, ML5C, BE4R, ML6?

TIA

From the VIN, gearbox is ML5C.

Marc will probably be able to help with any setting procedure.

Thank you very much Chris.

Yes, the set up procedure would be good to know too.

Ok, so guide completed James. It can be found here: C5 MK I ML5C Gearbox Control Cable Replacement Guide

I strongly suggest you have a good read through first so there are no surprises - it's quite a long guide....

If the cables are moving they are almost certainly serviceable, the issue is most likely adjustment, carefully read the manual and go through the procedures, the yellow locking bits on the cable ends require a tap with a light blunt object to release them , not the two little screwdrivers as described, you could achieve a no parts fix here.

There's no mention of screwdrivers in my guide, Oily, so not sure what procedure you are referring to? (just to avoid any confusion when he can't find reference to them).

I think you might find, as I did, that the outer cable has become loose in the crimped end and that all you need to do is push it back into place and re-crimp it or fasten it with some home made bodge. :)
Just pinched this from Marc's post. The crimped end I mentioned are here, instead of the inner cable moving the outer cable slides in and out of the crimped end.

Garage up north have had a look and seem to think it is in fact something broken off inside the gearbox with relation to the selector! Eek!

Well this has escalated!

The car is going to come south for a replacement gearbox from a member in Norfolk.

I know it is usual to replace the clutch and maybe flywheel when the box is apart— this will probably be skipped as this was all done quite recently by the previous owner’s garage when it had a a dual- to single-mass flywheel conversion done. Unless there is some horror found when apart of course!

Correct oil is on order with AEP: Total Transmission BV 75W80.

Anything else I should be considering while in here?

Any seals that should replaced as we go?
For example on the drain and fill plugs… or the reverse light switch which looks like it may have to double up as the full port after reading about the job on here!

P.S. I will be assisting but the work will be done by mate, a proper car mechanic.

So this was the clutch which let go— very apparent when box and engine separated! It had a very cheap single flywheel conversion— not branded LUK or Valeo and PO was proud of its cheapness but life was about 2 years on this cheap s**t. Garage up north and RAC man both said the gearbox was dead which it actually wasn’t.

Dual-mass flywheel reinstated, clutch replaced and replacement gearbox in stalled anyway due to occasional 1st gear selection issues in the past.

My mate did all the work really and I’m looking forward to driving it north do drop back to my sister.

Oh dear, SMF's aren't exactly complicated things, having been used uniquitously until around year 2000!
Suppose anyone can make a mess of anything, if aiming at cheapness.
Glad you got it sorted, and found someone to do the heavy work.

Cheers Chris.

I guess the SMF wasn’t the issue but rather the cheapest possible clutch the conversion manufacturer could find that they put in the conversion kit. I am suspicious of these conversions though as the rest of the drivetrain and engine/gearbox mounting was supposed to take a reduced damped force.

However the decider was that the problem I was having was trying to find what clutch the s**t kit would be compatible with and I never got over 75% certainty what I was buying would work correctly. The car had a pretty brutal clutch pedal feel with the unknown conversion.

Pedal is floaty light now and waiting to smash it’s DMF to bits in the next decade but I imagine it will sadly be bean cans by then as it is approaching 200,000 miles!
