Removing plastic oil filter caps without damage

Unread post by Wolds407 »

Just a little note on how I remove tight plastic oil filter caps without messing them up. Might be teaching nan to suck eggs to many but I thought I'd share the idea with some photos...

1. Clean around cap
2. Fit a jubilee clip around the 3-inch diameter cap resting it on the flange where the cap meets the alloy oil filter tub
3. Snug it up just tight enough
4. Use a traditional oil filter chain wrench (surely everybody has one of these from their childhood!) placing it around the jubilee clip and turn to release

I've seen many caps chewed up by folk trying to remove them with a socket, adjustable spanner or grips on the hex...

The photos are of my 407 2.0 HDi. After removing the engine cover and air intake duct, access isn't too bad even after I recently fitted a CCV catch can bracketed off the fuel filter housing. The oil filter was a year old with only 4.5k miles. I'm hoping the catch can will keep oil and inlet manifold cleaner in future!

Hope this entertains someone
