Xantia handbrake cables?!

I have searched the forum and not found step by step instructions on Xantias (1995 LX), its the n/side I'm doing, I've got the cable off the caliper, traced where it goes, it disappears under the exhaust heatshield. Have tried pulling/pushing and swearing at it, what else do i need to do?

firstly i would change both of them, as sods law you will replace one then a couple of weeks later the other side will snap.
when i replaced mine, it was a case of "feeling" around ontop of the heatshield & removing the one which you are replacing. i did have to remove a couple of those spring washers to get better access & fit new ones.
