It's my Reno 12

Unread post by bowie »

HI Europeans!

I'm a refugee from one your penal colonies! (Thanks for the beaches)

In way of introduction, suppose I'll just dive on in waxing lyrical about my stupid Reno.

Despite having long distances to travel, kangaroos to dodge and until recently, a couple of popular big engined local marquees to choose from, I've ended up with a Reno12 in the shed. It wasn't so much of a surprise, it's my fathers fault. He had Pug's, then I had Pugs, then my friends and had Pugs and Reno, now I have a Reno. Go figure.

Anyway it started off harmlessly, I collected it from under a tree, loved it and washed it, and scooted around the streets of Melbourne town with it. Life had me moving 1000km to Sydney which she drove, and I found myself working at a local race track and that's where it got dumb. Having access to a racing circuit and muppets with a workshop, being around race cars all day meant the poor thing didn't stay rego'd for much longer.

Anyway life happened and now I'm back in Melbourne, the "race car" found it's way back with me and I'm destined to continue the stupidness from all I've learnt along the way. Being a recently married chap I have a few years of outright stupor left before family will no doubt change priorities. This thread hopefully will record the shinanigans before that time doth come!

I just recently saved enough coin to buy a we little welder, I intend to burn lots of holes waste lots of material and hopefully learn a bit of fabrication on the way. Sorry for the all the crap shots of poorly welded things expected. I'll be excited  but no doubt you will have seen all this before.

Oh! what's a introduction without some pictures!

Here is the pile of sh1t I love so much when I picked it up (R1170 for ye fellow nerds, '71, 1298cc, 810, non vented discs,
1st.jpg
Once washed and a few bits and bobs sorted it was alright (the mi16 I should have never sold but did so when the cam belt snapped)

Then my neighbour hit it and I was sad
https://photos.app.goo.gl/9jTHqePnEX9frGGNA

So I collected a new panel, and by that time the bonnet was a different colour, it was 4 different colours so I parked it under a tree in the front yard and painted it (because sunshine, thanks again for the beaches)

It turned out ok! :)

I found some old wheels a guy had made from cutting some R18 centres and welding them to wider hoops, it was starting to look cool
gorgor.jpg
Fitting wider wheels was the single greatest thing I could have ever done to be honest. Wide wheels and fat tyres rule. Oh they are 205mm tyres FYI :P

I still had the cheese cutters, and I scooted around Sydney with them for a while

Black wheels look better

Somewhere along the way my muffler rusted away and i fitted a little hot dog because of course;

And I thought it was really cool :-D

I notice from your other fleet list that you have Renault Floride/Caravelle in your stable.

I carried this avatar for many years on the FCF, just changed it this year. They are moving out of my price bracket over here, but I love the work of Thierry Dubois, an the image conjured up of a bit of open toppage on the Cote-d'Azur is superb.

hehe! That is a nice picture :)

Sadly not me with access to those rear engined beauties! They deserve proper money here too at the moment,

Now where was I, ah yes It was around this time I was able to start taking advantage of my vocation and use the track.

Here is a stock Reno 12 Vs a Nissan R33 GTR

Maybe a V8 Supercar

Having the doors blown off just wont do I thought to myself.

It wasn't long before I had found a set of adjustable Koni's and we chopped the standard springs.

It was roughly around this time we fitted a little trigger wheel running this NoDiz spark ignition computer. Turns out it's a MegaJolt rip off but it's been working a treat! She now uses a Ford Focus coil pack and it's been fantastic.

Now we have spark, well a bigger carb of course. This 32/36 DGV was good for another 15km at top speed! :P

Then we just went around cutting and removing every we could. She is left with a glass front windscreen, and now has plastic everywhere else, along with every door stripped and most latches and what not removed. We got it down to 740kg. But I want to get it a little lighter before I add a cage, I reckon some fiberglass panels will be in order eventually.

here she is playing on a damp track at a Historic night with some Sunbeams et al

Get a Reno 12 everyone!

Aaaaaaaaanyway.. it's in my shed, I no longer have access to a race track, so best give it some attention, and I want more power.

I have a couple of 45 DHLA's to go on. I'll need to make some manifolds (hence the welder) and well, it will be silly to do without getting a cam sorted and the head done.. That's my plan for it this year anyway;

- Stupid cam
- Too much compression
- Twin DHLA's
- Extractors

Yes sorry for the slip up. I'll leave the post in as a record of my incompetance never afraid to make mistakes! I was reading the Renault 30 thread and it turns out its is new user sunroof who has the Floride/caravelle :-D

Hi Bowie

Just to let you know that you can also upload your photos directly to the Forum - just use the Full Editor, then click the attachments button at the bottom, select pics from phone, tablet or PC. They will upload in a list and you can then place the cursor where you want the picture and click the 'Place Inline' button next to the image you want to insert. The benefit of uploading them this way is that they are always visible in the thread without having to keep clicking links and secondly if anything happened to the third party image hosting site, we would always have them stored on our server. :-D

HI Bowie,
A small omission in Marc's how to load pics - after clicking the 'attachments' button at the bottom you then have to click the 'add files' button to enable you to select as Marc said.!! :-D
I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!
I used to ride on two wheels, but now I need all four!

And in other news, I found some inspiration for my manifold creation.
197622505_2740022109631918_9033101494501295183_n.png
Can't see it will end being that pretty but a kids gotta dream!

I'm going to cheat and get a DHLA / DCOE face plate at least, and I have a spare stock inlet manifold I can molest to make a cylinder head side template, and I'm not sure I want the primary exhaust tubes that long, but it kinda makes sense to position the 4-1 collector where they have. oh, and I'll start with a single, the twin DHLA's are really too big unless I spin the stoopid thing to 8k+

Another sensible chap made a template with PVC pipe first, I think I'll do the same and see how much sh1t this is going to be.

Definitely recognise the Renault bit. The rest is almost worthy of being called artwork. I calculated and sized the one off exhaust for a Lancia Twin Cam powered stock car (not the same where you come from) and set up and jetted the double twin choke Dellortos that went with it. I appreciate the amount of work that has gone into this. Got to drive the stock car on slicks in the rain at a mechanics race - made 3 out of 6 corners and didn't finish last.

You will find that bodywork/steering/suspension will limit your choice for primary and secondary pipe sizes and a single twin choke is adequate unless you are going for absurd power outputs in which case injection is a better route.

Well yes and no. The engine is hanging out the front of the suspension and steering of course, so it's not too bad.

I will have to be careful where i think the collector will go, and I think a 4-1 style manifold will be what I'll case, its placement will determine my suffering.

4 into 1 gives a better spread of (lower) power than 4 - 2 - 1 rather than peak power and is by it's nature more tolerant of mis matched primary lengths. Have you ever seen a Stacked 4 into 1 where all 4 pipes go into a large fishtail type box inline?
