C5

Unread post by deano1970 »

hi all........
my first visit for 5 years......i'm thinking of buying a really nice C5 2.0 hdi on a 56 plate.....cheap......guy selling it says the clutch is really high but not slipping, and that it starts to judder at about 45 mph, does this sound like the clutch going? he did say he replaced one on another with a single mass flywheel conversion kit for £140 off ebay and £200 for a mechanic to fit it.....does this sound right? i've asked a mechanic friend who said the price to change it is about right, but do the above problems point to the clutch going?? looks a really nice car, top spec......thanks for any info...........dean.

Slipping can usually be determined by flooring it in 5th or 6th gear at about 50-60. It can indicate wither the clutch or the DMF.

Whether you go for a conversion on or not is up to you, but personally speaking I would not recommend them as the dual Mass Flywheels are designed to counter the torsional stress produced from the engine torque produced at lower revs - but is a personal choice. Whatever you decide, don't leave it as if it is the DMF, you don't want it breaking up...

cheers. he wants £500 for the car and i had a C5 that needed a new clutch and it was almost £600....bearing that in mind, if it needs a new one and it's the dual one,the car is costing £1100, not really what i want to pay for a 16 year old car........I asked cos i had a c5 before and someone who was buying it said the clutch was high, i took it to a garage and he said it was OK and like that as it was a hydraulic clutch? so i don't know if this is the problem on this car......

The one I bought from you had a high clutch, started slipping a bit in 2018, just occasionally for a few seconds.
Retired last year but still working, mostly.

lasted well then?? so what about the juddering he mentions at 45mph? is that clutch related? looks really nice but don't want a nice looking car broken down on the drive? :)

A high biting pointy is not always an issue. Put it this way, the brand new petrol C3 I had from the dealer for a loan car had less than 700 miles on the clock and a really high biting point - so much so, that I stalled it a few times as the biting point on my Aircross is very low down.

As for the juddering - that can be a sign of a badly fitted clutch too...

Try to see if the judder can be made to occur at the same engine speed in several gears - slightly uphill under a load is best. If you can make it occur at the same engine speeds then I suspect the Dual Mass Flywheel might be trying to make a bid for freedom. not a pretty sight if it does! Type of replacement flywheel is up to you - both will work. Remember, though, that this engine/transmission was designed with DMF in mind.
