C5 X7 - Drive Shaft Boot Clip - Take a look at yours!

Unread post by Sloppysod »

Hi All, this post is for information only.
In 2017, while looking for a leak I noticed the outer clip of my offside CV drive shaft boot was missing, it took a number of attempts to get it reattached using a different clips, the only that held was the Steel bands that Laser tools supply, the other clips I used would last a few days then fail.

The reason for this post is that yesterday I had to refit another clip, this time to the nearside CV joint as it had broken.
So my suggestion is next time you, or your machanic are under either wheel arch have a look and check how secure the boot is, refitting the clip is not a big job, but doing the job is one of the messiest, as with the boot running free the grease is sprayed everywhere and has to be cleaned.

This has happened to me.
Had to use a jubilee clip in the end.

Didn't try a Jubilee clip, wasn't sure of the clearances inside the hub carrier, so ended up buying the Lazer tools and bands.

Never had a failed clip or band on my c5x7, but 5 times changed rubished rubber boots. Originals and "copies"...

"Dear Mr.Citroen,
After a mere 11 years and 100 and something thousand miles of (virtually) impeccable reliability, today I've had to spend an outrageous £1.28, a gob full of stinky grease and 10 minutes of my valuable time fixing my car.
You should be ashamed.
Everybody was right. Should have bought German."

All sorted.
Piece of cake and definitely no fault of Sloppy Sid.

Similar to Gregor, I’ve not had a band fail in 167,000 miles :)

I think I’ve changed just 2 gaiters in that time, with no problem with the replacement bands.

Hi all, reviving this old post to add another issue I have never seen/heard off before.
Having just removed my wheel I noticed the inside of the wheel and the whole near-side front suspension covered in grease.
Unlike the off-side boot, where it came adrift of the hub, the near-side boot is still in place on the hub but the grease is flying out while driving.
I would have thought that, if the clip loosens then the boot would fall off the hub, but it didn't but just created a mess that now needs cleaning up.

I suggest you have a look next time your under the front of you car

You need a scoop up, collect and re-route to steering rack pinion distribution system Stu!

Hi,
My theory of the cause:

Two C5 X7's suffered broken boot clip bands the last was October 2021.

Initial thought was – oh bad luck (on a family web site).

On investigation I think that I have found the cause and I think that it can be prevented.

There was a build up of rust all around the CV just within the boot under the boot clip band outer/weather edge. The rust will have increased the tension in the boot clip and caused it to snap. Used a sharp bladed screw driver to remove the rust before fitting a new band, as the CV boot was OK.

On inspection it was necessary to scrape a build up of rust from the opposite (passenger) side CV boot which was forming a ridge under the edge of the boot. Treated with spray grease in the hope that it would offer protection from more rust.

Until now has not let go.
Hope that helps.
Andy.

I'm afraid I use cable ties - never had on break or come off.

Andy that is exactly what I done on the drivers side, so will be doing the same on the passenger side when I can.
My car is sitting the garage on stands as the wheel are away for refurbishment and I will need a little more room than I have to degrease, clean & fit new clip - I use the 'Laser Boot bands, they don't stretch so they stay tight.

Cheers anyway for the comments.

Anyone used this https://wd40.co.uk/product/fast-acting-degreaser-spray/

Old thread i know, but the left hand outer clip has popped off again!
My question is, do i buy another laser band or the type that you crimp?
Thoughts please🤔
