XM 2.1 TD Woodruff key

Unread post by wesacosa »

Hi All
I am gathering parts needed for my upcoming timing belt change on my 97 2.1 TD. I understand that on post 95 cars the crank sprocket Woodruff key needs updating

I went to the Citroen dealer and he gave me this printout, looking at some pictures online I have now bought item 7. However I am now lead to believe that it needs replacing because the original one was poor design and the new one is bigger (like part 15). Have I ordered the wrong part with part 7 (they made me order a pack of two so doubly annoying) and if so why on earth do they still sell a part which is seemingly not suitable?
Cheers
Wes

In all the times I'd done XUD (and XU, TU - which have similar arrangements) timing belts I've never, ever felt the need to replace woodruff keys unless one has got itself lost!

Unless the key shows itself to be damaged in any way I'd not worry about it...

Trust me, I've done a good few in my time!

thanks Jim., but it's not replacing like for like, there is a specific note in the Haynes and another procedure I saw which says the post 1995 2.1 TD XM must replace the factory fitted Woodruff key with a modified version, so I assumed there is a design fault with the factory version

I had a '96 406 with the xud11 and never changed the key. I would also be suspicious of the BOL's. Does anyone say 'why if needs replacing'? Unless a good reason was quoted by PSA (This engine is fitted in Citroen and Peugeot as you probably know) I wouldn't pay any attention.

The picture on the first post is from the Citroen dealer so they clearly have a second key available (part 15) so I would imagine there must be something in it. But I cannot find anything which says why it needs to change. All of the pictures I have seen on XUD11 cambelt changes online show a small woodruff key , so I am not sure what is different on a post 95 XM only which means it needs that larger key. Was hoping someone here may know

I know nothing about this except for your pictures, it looks as though there are two individual keys in No 7 each in their own slot, key no 15 appears to be a single long key that occupies both slots but I can't help as to which came first.

Looking again at the No 15 in the picture it looks as though there is only one arced face that fits into one of the slots so I would think there's a possibility that stress could occur in the middle and it might fail with differences between the load on the two cogs/pulleys. Maybe that is the reason for the change.

its also quite interesting that the first procedure says replace on anything post 1995 but the Haynes says anything pre an engine build code, which might means there are probably cars which qualify for one of those but not the other!

Wes, pop your VIN (it is auto-masked on post submission) up for me and I'll see if there is anything I can find about this. There are 2 x 2.1 TDs - the XUD11ATE and XUD11BTE engine as well as the non-turbo 2.1D. I might be able to see if there is something listed.

So you have the XUD11BTE.

The parts diagram which looks the same to the one you were given
Crank Key.PNG
From what I can see there are no technical service bulletins showing under the crankshaft or timing sections for the Crankshaft or the Timing operations.

thanks, hmm that's very odd. The Autodata procedure someone showed me suggested the bigger key is the replacement. I guess I might just have to take it apart and see which one I have, but trying to avoid having car in bits whilst I wait for parts to arrive

Maybe just for convenience of assembly at the factory, only one to fit and line up, saves .0009 of a second on the assembly line. :-D
