ZX Air Horn

Unread post by ZXdanslamaison »

Car : 2l 8v '93 ZX
My air horn hasn't been working even though the compressor is supplying it with air. I have an old horn from the scrappies which works, but one thing has been concerning me: when I took the original horn off and ran the compressor on its own , there was lot of grey watery sludge that came out with the air. I'm speculating that this what killed the last horn (which actually looks fairly new).
I checked out the compressor and cannot see how this sludge could have got in there. There is spare air nodule on the side of the unit which wasn't connected to anything - should this be connected to an intake pipe away from the road?
Any suggestions welcomed

I have the air horns too, theres a spigot on the compressor unit (Inlet) that looks as if something ought to push onto it? but what? some kind of filter?

if it has been oiled incorrectly then the excess oil will mix with air creating the sludge.

The compressor sounds a bit rough in operation - but, like I say, it does work.
Oh, and I wish it was a 12v electrical one - thats what *every* car in my scrappies has on it. It was lucky that they had just got in a turbo D ZX!

Do what I did. Replace the air horn with a 12v electrical horn. You can use the wiring wich runs to the air-compressor and connect it to the 12v electrical horn. Simple, cheaper and better! [:)]

Air horns - like conventional horns must always be mounted so that the horn itself faces downwards to some extent so that the water drains out rather than going into the instrument where it will cause corrosion.
I seem to remember my sister telling me that the horn on her 205 Gti 1.9 was mounted incorrectly by the manufacturers, and then subsequently by the dealer who replaced it.
Can't see that a carefully routed pipe would hurt.

Yes water will not run uphill, though when the compressor is pulling........dont sound the horn when driving through a flood.
