DIY with function over finesse!!

Post by mickthemaverick »

I decided to start a new thread for this post on the OTCL as I think it may get more contributions than a personal blog in the members area!!
Today I ran out of excuses to avoid the last job on my to do list (There will be another soon no doubt as they are entered by SWMBO :-D ) and had to knuckle down and get on with it. 'Rotting shed floorboards to be replaced in the back corners' was the entry. I opened the back door:

I opened the shed door:

I emptied the shed:

I looked at the job:

I had a little think and decided that only the last 700mm of the 2 boards at the end were rotting. It is clear that the cause was enemy action from our long time rodents in the garden so I felt that simply replacing the boards would only give them more to feast on so I decided to resort to my good old favourite postcrete to fill the void between the shed floor and the concrete base beneath, thus preventing any further attack. I know the reality is they will find an alternative thing to destroy but hey, it's an ongoing game we play, last time it was the greenhouse and having postcreted them out of there they have gone for the shed's weak points at the back corners!! So I set about removing the rot and preparing the surfaces for postcrete filling:

Then I had to shoot off to B&Q for £4.50 worth of postcrete, which is 20kg to those that are taking note of what I'm up to, and a couple of boards to replace the wood with. On my return I gave the neighbouring timbers a coat of bitumen, all I had in stock, and filled the cavities with the postcrete:

Then it was out with the watering can, liberally wetting, not soaking, the postcrete before inserting the new bitumen backed boards.

Not elegant by any stretch of the imagination but I am fully confident that the rot is gone, the enemies expelled and we live to fight the next war.
On her inspection SWMBO said:
"That looks ok but the wood doesn't match!!"
I'll have to leave it there as I need to go and get some more postcrete!! :-D :-D
I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!

I can find you a shed job Mick, the felt has blown off my shed roof in the recent week's winds. :)
Man is, by nature, a lazy beast, he does not need twice encouraging to do nothing.

I'd love to come and give you a hand with that Eric but I don't do ladders anymore! Since the fall that wrecked my left ankle I have stayed away from any jobs which are beyond two steps up the step ladder. Sorry!! :-D

That looks like an old Super Panther mower, and if you used the rear roller on it to tamp down the sharp sand before you laid the block paving......... then how come we can't see your horses tethered to a gate or your cowboy hat sitting on a post somewhere ?
Sadly no longer a C5 owner :(

So, we have Men with Sheds! Something rather cosy and reassuring about that...

YOU CAN'T HAVE ENOUGH SHEDS. And if they fill up with mostly men....... is that a problem?
