Oh bother!

Not quite what I said when I tried to change the BX's fuel filter. I undid all the allen screws and a fountain of derv gushed out. Now I have clutch slip[:(]
And it wasn't the right filter either - drat and double drat!

You think that's bad????
I tried to do a simple oil & filter change on my Xantia 3.0 V6 Exclusive Auto. Was VERY impressed when the oil from the drainplug was lovely and clear, just like new infact. Then a B I G shock when taking off the oil filter the oil was old and black. (some might of guessed what I'd done already) Yes, I had drained the 'lifetime fill' auto gearbox of ALL its oil. Not only that, contaminated it with dirty engine oil. Cost me an extra £25 in special gearbox oil and a day off work to put it right (most of that time trying to find the gearbox filler/dipstack.
We learn by our mistakes, don't we!!!!!

My mate tried to top up the gearbox oil in a VW Golf and realised he had the wrong plug when a spring and plunger came out. When he tried to put it back you could only get the odd or even gears, depending on where the lever was when you put the plug back.
My worst "I really didn't wanna do that" moment was dismantling the sprag clutch (like a bearing but it will only turn one way, not designed to come to bits) in an MGB overdrive. I managed to get it together though.

Or blast a can of aerosol brake and clutch cleaner throught the little hole near the starter while a mate presses the clutch pedal, biological washing powder in solution is good too.

Thanks guys. Coke is better at derusting than degreasing, I used a tin of lighter fluid first, with the pedal wedged down, then blasted it with the brake cleaner and the engine ticking over. The plate would spin slowly, I reasoned.
Last night I took it for a run and it was worse. This morning, it appears to be cured. Fingers are crossed! To Salisbury tomorrow with DLM to plunder his spares car. That will tell me...

When I was changing the gearbox oil in my first car (polo) I'd poured about 1/2 a bottle of new oil in before I realised it was running out onto the floor.
I'd been pouring it into the clutch by mistake.. aargh![:(!]
