5008 Non starter

Looking for someone to point me in the right direction, I can’t help but think I am missing something simple.

I have a mate with a Peugeot 5008 1.6 HDI
He came to use my workshop over the weekend to change cam cover gasket to cure an oil leak, He drove the car in and started to strip of the stuff to get to the cover.
He managed to get enough slack in the wiring harness over the top of the engine to slide out the cover and change the gasket.
Then reassembled everything, He started it to check it was ok before putting all the covers, insulation etc back on.
Then after finishing it off he came to start it and it turned over once, then stopped cranking.
I got involved and thought he must have disturbed something but it all looks ok, I put 12v direct to starter solenoid and it turns over but no start, on the switch it just cranks once then stops.
Diagbox says fault with cam sensor, no synchronisation. He bought a new sensor and I fitted it today. Not an easy job!!. Reassembled everything and it started.. I was amazed, turned it off and now it is back to the same with 1 turn over then stops cranking.
I have something in the back of my mind telling me it’s a High pressure fuel problem.

Any thoughts very welcome

If you clear the fault codes does it allow you to start the engine again?
Is there any damage to the ends of either the original sensor or new sensor? i.e. . were the sensors adjusted correctly when they were fitted? You need to press it against the cam pulley then back it off about 1mm then tighten it.
If you fit them tight against the pulley it can damage them.

I haven't cleared the code today, I did when I first got involved but it didn't start. The sensor I changed looked ok, I didnt realise it was adjustable, it seemed a tight fit in the position it was in but I will check it in the morning.
Also considering taking off the timing belt covers and checking timing, but I can't see how it would alter from being good before the work,

Im not sure 100% on this exact engine if this one is adjustable but most of the PSA HDi engines i have dealt with are. If you look at the sensor on the left (from a DW10 engine) you can see that the mounting hole is slightly elongated to allow for adjustment. The one on the right (from a later Relay van i think) is not adjustable.
Its the first thing that springs to mind based on what has been done to the car. The fact it drove in & is now not working after having work done id be 95% sure this is a human error fault.

I am sure it is a human error, Sensor on this has a lead that is part of it and doesn't look to be adjustable
I will put it on Diagbox and start from the beginning in the morn

Had Diagbox on this morn, Cleared all the faults listed, mainly caused by me unplugging various things to check connections.
Now only fault coming up when trying to start is: P2291. .Local. Permanent fault. Rise in pressure in the injection rail is too slow on starting.

This 5008 must have a bad connection on something, Had another poke around various connectors looking for something my mate has disturbed, Then went to crank it over while watching parameters on Diagbox. Engine started straight away much to my surprise, Leaving it running for a while before I turn it off and try again !!

After turning it off, wouldn't restart, back to cranking for 1 turn, then stopping. Now getting on Diagbox, Communication error between tool and vehicle when I try to crank it.
I am coming to the end of my patience with this and will probably give it back to my mate and he can have it recovered to a dealer...... I hate being beaten!!

I wonder if, during the time the initial work was done, some dirt might have found its' was into a connector or two? It might be worth unplugging connecters (one at a time) in that section of the loom, spraying some proper contact cleaner in, plug/unplug them a few times each (to help clean the contacts), and see if that helps.

Tried that, had all off and checked them, cleaned with contact cleaner and refitted. Followed wires back to ecu and engine bay fuse box, removed fusebox and checked everything for bad or loose connections, removed earths from body and engine and checked them for bad connections.
one thing I have noticed is the speedo/tacho illumination lights go out when it stops cranking. But not sure if they are supposed to...... Tomorrows another day with a fresh mind at it..

Still no change with this 5008.
Starts and runs fine about 1 turn of the key in 20 turns, The rest of the time I get about 1 revolution and then it stops cranking. and now no fault codes on Diagbox, I still think it is a fuel problem but last time it started I drove it out of my workshop and parked it on the garden while I wait for some inspiration !!
