NG4 + Camera

Post by Mattharris230 »

Morning all,
I have a NG4 NaviDrive in my 2010 C5, and id liketo install a reverse camera. The camera works if I use it through the AUX port in the glove box so I assume it will work on the radio when I go into reverese as long is its activated. How easy is it to activate the reverse camera function on the radio? Thanks

The NG4 is not designed for a reverse camera.

The AUX input is only designed for a video source from cameras, camcorders, game console, portable DVD players etc using the RCA inputs. The NG4 was never designed for a reversing camera. Video sources are disabled over a certain speed (anything over a crawl) for driver safety and legalities.

Only certain versions of the RT6 fitted to later facelift Tourer models and the SMEG touchscreens that were fitted to the last production runs of the X7 had this function.

The only way you will have this function is to fit an independent system with its own control box and a load of wiring and a new interface, but you can't do it with the NG4 as it stands.

Hello Marc,

Okay, I figured that an additional module is needed to activate the video input, but maybe deep in the system, like in RT6, there is a sys file that depends on the speed of the car, and it can be changed?

At the moment I have a drive from NG4, but when connected to a PC, I do not see any logical drive. Maybe you know how to see file system?

What are you trying to achieve? There is no special configuration for changing anything.

1) The NG4 does not support a reversing camera.
2) The NG4 already has video playback via 2 options:
a) From a DVD in the unit (whilst the vehicle is stationary).
b) From the AUX Video input socket in the passenger Glovebox where the SIM card for the internal telephone is located along with the Audio inputs. This is intended for a camcorder / external video device playback but again only whilst the car is stationary.

The reverse camera part is understandable. However for the video in motion. Is there a way to bypass it? I heard it can be done by grounding the parking break wire. I actually want this because I want to screen mirror my phone on my rotating screen through a third-party device and it works only while in stationary. But 9mce the speed exceeds 15 km it blocks for safety reasons. All I want is to display navigation from my phone to my car screen. Any suggestions?

It's a legal requirement unfortunately and if you ever got caught or had an accident, it would have serious implications for insurance and personal liability if it was found that this was the cause. It's why CarPlay and Android Auto have to block any video playback apps from their systems.

As it's a legal and safety issue, we can't facilitate any discussion on circumventing any such safety features. I suggest if you want navigation just use use the BMW maps that many others do after some modification to update the built in factory-fitted navigation on the NG4. There are sites out there that provide these with a little searching.
