C5 2.2 HDi Exhaust

Post by mickthemaverick »

Driving on the supply run today I noticed a scraping noise over a hump back bridge. When I got to the supermarket I had a quick look under the back to discover the outer skin of my backbox has rotted through on the left side and unwrapped itself to hang down a couple of inches, sorry 500mil, from the road. When I got home I found a couple of 100mm trunking metal jubilee style clips which when connected in tandem were long enough to wrap right round the silencer and effect a temporary repair. I have now looked on ebay for a new box and there seem to be two styles, one with a long feeder pipe and one with a stubby feeder. Both are around the £70-80 mark to be sent for DIY fitting. There is another option around £110 fitted or a company which will make and install a custom back box in stainless steel with a lifetime guarantee for £140. I wondered what other members experiences and thoughts are? :)

All my car fettling over more than 40 years has been done outside! You may be keen as mustard to crawl under a car Mick this time of year/this weather pick a good day! Of course if you have a garage to use different matter.

Exhausts tend to turn into pain in the neck jobs in my recent experience, and for the sake of £30 someone with the car up on a lift will have an easier job than yourself. £110 fitted option for me and I wouldn't bother escalating cost with the stainless steel.

I have to concur with Neil.
I look at it in terms of how much my time is worth and when not if i make a mess of it i have to pay out to rectify my mistakes.
£30 for them to get the right box and faff about with hangers and paste is a price worth paying in my view.

Thankyou both for your thoughts, interestingly you have both agreed with my initial opinion that the stainless option simply isn't worthwhile for my car although I can now confirm that I will not be paying to have it fitted.
I can reverse the car into my carpeted garage, crank up the suspension then trolley jack onto my axle stands. Although the garage door has to remain open I do lower the shutter down to the roof and lean two boards either side of the car to block the majority of the opening. Then with the carpeted floor, my lead lights, the fan heater and radio on it is a pretty comfortable working environment. I hope to only change the back box which simply involves two rubber mounting bands and one clamp. I have now ordered a back box, clamp and bands for the total of £92 delivered to me and it will keep me out of mischief for a while. I do have many grinding discs as well as blow lamp and exhaust paste to hand so it shouldn't be too bad!! :-D

PS I have already given the clamp and join their preliminary WD40 treatment so they have a few days to soak and I will repeat that process daily until I get the parts! :-D

Now if i had known your garage was more like the Snug in your local then i would have opted for the cheaper option of doing it yourself.

I take it you have a special hook for your smoking jacket :rofl2:

I wouldn't know Colin, that's up to the outside valet when he's laying out the tools and opening the doom bar cans :-D

If it's got one of those daft single bolt clamps, then I would invest £10 on a set of the pliers to get them off, worth every penny and then some, even for a single use!!

Good sound advice Richard

Ah that would nudge the price up to £102 then very close to the £110 fire and forget price and no mention of the payment costs to the outside Valet

Bugger just read post above so back to the drawing board Mick, you are still quids in but still posting my thoughts :)

Progress report - none made other than the back box, rubbers and clamp arriving. Still awaiting the exhaust paste I ordered before I can start but the clamp and joint has been WD40'd daily!! With snowy weather approaching it could be middle of next week before I get any further!! :)

Wish I had your luxurious garage to complete my ongoing repair/s. Unable to do anything since last weekend either it's been snowing or raining. Now it's forecast the 2nd Beast from the East to arrive. I might just have to wait until spring!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hopefully you get all your parts and essentials to carry out the repair in this weather.

Good luck

Kenny

I was a bit late getting up this morning due to watching the Test Match so I was pleasantly surprised when I came down, expecting to have to go shopping, and found a) the exhaust paste has arrived and b) SWMBO had gone out for the supplies instead. So I duly headed for the garage hoping the valet had sussed the situation. Indeed he had and my overalls and the necessary were all waiting for me. I quickly changed and then remembered I had left the phone indoors:
The tools and parts ready for the job.
The tools and parts ready for the job.
As I began mentally planning the indoor phone rang so I went back indoors to discover that my amazon account was about to be stopped blah blah blah........ I hung up and then had to visit the small room. When I got back out to the garage the smoking jacket hook had been found, though of course I was not wearing my smoking jacket as I had dressed to do the supply run so my day clothes were in its place:
Day clothes hung up for me.
Day clothes hung up for me.
This meant that the working end of the garage was ready
Ready for action
Ready for action
so I turned to open the door to be greeted with an unexpected sight!!
Spoiler: show
SWMBO returns!!
SWMBO returns!!
Blast it!! She had got home while I was indoors and was in the front garden in front of the garage door discussing the weather with our neighbour!!
So the job will have to wait another day, but I tried!!! :-D
