Starting problems Citroen Berlingo2003

Post by Pjotter »

I have a Citroen Berlingo 2003 and it has starting problems looked at all the wires plus and minus if not corroded cleaned them m.new battery and still plays up. When I start the car for the first time it is struggling a lot when I have driven for a few minutes and turn off the engine it almost once to start immediately. So if engine is warm ma it starts easier.
Could someone give me some advice about this and what it could be b don't want to remove starter motor if not necessary

What engine is in it?

It is likely that the starter motor is on the way out. When the engine is cold so is the oil (which is also down in the sump area, so more to move around as the engine starts). This means the engine is 'heavier' to turn over. Once the engine is warmed up the oil is thinner (and more dispersed around the engine), so there is less load on the starter motor.

I have replaced the starter motor on a C5 (and helped to do one on a Berlingo), and it is not a difficult process. You can get a refurbished starter motor from GSF for around £120, but if you then return the old motor in the packaging provided you should get back around £60 (well, I did a couple of years ago). Avoid ECP if you can; their 'nickname' is Euro Crap Parts, and they have earned it!

If it's a 1.9D there's a good chance the exhaust valve clearances have closed up, holding the valves slightly open when cold - makes them a pig to start, even with good plugs!!

If it's a 1.9 diesel I'd put my money on glow plugs.
