I drive a x7 2.0 hdi manual 140hp 2010. So far I have been very happy with the car since I bought it in may.
The last 8 weeks or so I have had minor electrical issues like economy mode is activated despite the battery is new. Error message “brake system failure” shows briefly when driving over bumps (bad roads) in high speeds. This seems to be triggered by the wheels on the passenger side only.
Yesterday I was driving home from the north of Sweden and the temperature was -16 celsius. At 90 kmh passenger wheels were hitting a hole and triggered the same error message only this time it was followed (after 2 sec) by a total cut out. The car was totally dead as if someone removed the battery. Not even the warning lights worked. We stopped the car and after aprox 40 sec the power returned and I could start the car like nothing had happened. This happened one more time yesterday. This time the error message showed and the engine stopped running but the power returned immediately. Once the car stopped it started right away.
Anyone had similar problems? Common fault on c5 x7? Were to start searching?
Really thankful for all help and ideas!

Id check the main positive & earth connections & battery terminals. Check the main body to engine earths & the main positive connection at the under bonnet fusebox.

Ok, will do. My plan is also to check the three main fuses. In the UK the Government have a central databse of vehicle recalls that we can look up. Do you have the same over there ? The reason I ask is because there were recalls to do with faulty fuseboxes and faulty cables for early C5 X7, but they were specific to certain chassis number ranges i.e. from build date xx/xx/xx to build date xx/xx/xx.

This is very interesting because I have a 2009 2.0 hdi and have service history to the effect that the fuse box was changed on my car but I didn't know it was due to a recall
I will check my paperwork tomorrow These are the messages I have had previously on my car
At least 3 occasions
£129 paid so not a recall

Ok, so that was a TSB for an issue where the car is hesitating, jerking, stalling, lack of power or where the Auto gearbox can become locked in 3rd (limp home mode) on the DT10BTED4 engine.
If fault codes P0215 and P0245 are showing up then it will either be Fuse F1 that has failed, but if not and these 2 fault codes are showing, then the engine fusebox needs replacing (as has obviously been done in your case Steve). From build date 12013 (29/09/2009) a new fusebox was fitted that had a modified main relay.
The fusebox went through at least 3 revisions from 6500FQ, 2500HG, 6500HK depending on build date (Citroen Numbers) then all were replaced with 9675877980, then this one was also replaced with 9807028580, which is the latest incarnation.
So this may help you identify the part you have on your label of your current fusebox.

Oh, just a few codes then Gustav!
Ignore all the P1351 codes - they are just Glow Plug related and just about every HDI has this code. It will take me a while to get the other info posted up, so check back in a year or 2 (just kidding 20 minutes or so....)

Can the above be triggered by a another common fault that can explain and are connected to the total cut out? Main fuses? Main relay? Main earth? I have no starting issues what so ever.....

The only thing that seems to be common is Electrical Harness/Connector and to me along with known issues with the fuse box and an 11 year old car i would plump for the main culprit being the fuse box.

Yes, I would also reckon on the fuse box if you have checked the Fuses and the electrical connections. A cut-out like that is rare and likely to be an electrical failure of a main component, so I too would suggest the fuse box / relay component is damaged / failing.
