Citroen Nemo EBD/ABS fault

Post by tonupturner »

Hi all,

Hoping you can all avoid me getting into trouble with my boss...

I drive a 2013 Citroen Nemo 660 LX HDI 1.2L van for work & in an attempt to make the cabin a more peaceful place (it's loud without the bulkhead) I snipped the wire to the incredibly loud rear parking sensor sounder hidden in the panel to the right of the rear doors - not sure if they're standard or aftermarket? Anyway, ever since then I've had a fault come up that says "EBD failure see handbook" & "ABS unavailable".

I've checked all the fuses in the engine bay & they're all okay.

I've ran the van for about a week since the error message has come up & it's still there.

The battery is currently on trickle charge as I'm typing this.

Any thoughts?

Fatal mistake cutting ANY wires. These are not like cars from the 70s, 80s and earlier.

Modern vehicles use multiplexed networks to link most of the main electrical systems (sensors, ECUs and equipment) to the main controlling ECUs like the BSI / Engine management ECUs.

Depending on the system and type of connection, cutting a wire can have a direct effect on other systems if you sever the communication link between them.

There are multiple data networks, each responsible for certain types of systems (Powertrain, safety, comfort etc. as an example). I suggest you 'uncut' it and get it properly repaired as until you do you will likely get other errors and faults when the car is diagnosed. Depending on the type of system, certain equipment may fall into a backup mode, resulting in reduced functionality.

If you pop your VIN up I can at least advise you if these were factory options or not. I suspect they are though.

Uh oh.

It's a tiny wire with 2 cores & I have since connected them both together.

VIN number is: VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff]

According to your VIN, as the car left the factory, it was NOT fitted with a factory-fitted parking assistance system.

So it looks like an aftermarket option has been fitted and if this has been wired into the vehicle's multiplexed wiring system, then this can still cause the issues if you have snipped it.

When reconnecting it make sure you connect the cores correctly and insulate.

Interesting, thank you Marc.

I may try reconnecting the parking sensor sounder & seeing if that does anything.

Can I fix it then? It's due in for an MOT at the start of October so it'll definitely get flagged then. I haven't actually noticed a difference with the braking so it could just be the warnings lights are flashing up by mistake?

No, the warnings are not by mistake - if there is an issue with the electrical system or a component the warning will come up and that will be an MOT failure - so I wouldn't bother taking it in until you have fixed it.

I suggest you put everything back as it was and see if that resolves the other issues. If not, then it will need a diagnostic to see what the issues are, but don't underestimate the importance of ensuring multiplexed wiring is not treated the same as standard wiring. All the ECUs can talk to each other using binary coded data signals, so if one system cannot communicate with another, then it will flag a warning - and this could be the result of a severed or incorrect wiring connection on another system altogether.
