My Xantia, Fred, started making a funny noise when braking at 1 particular point on my journey. Not at any other time, oddly. Took the pads off to find this.
Here’s a cat to take the stress away.

Have done just that on one or two occasions. Eventually steel touches steel, and tells you very audibly.

Re: Idiot. Brake pads very low.
I saw, a few years ago on this forum, a post where a mechanic had a car come in with brake problems. The disks were so worn they appears to have spokes.

One of my friends gave his wife an Alfa Sud to drive, she rang me in a panic, stuck on the busiest roundabout in Hereford with a rear wheel locked up.
When I got there the cops had dragged it off the road onto a forecourt.
One of the brake pads had worn out, fell out and found its way into the slots in the disc locking it up.

IIRC those Alfasuds were a cow to change the rear pads as they had inboard rear discs. No wonder it was left as long as possible.

P6 rear inboard pads (early Dunlop type) were just about impossible to replace, unless you were slim and double-jointed.
Chubby folk took to dropping the rear diff, or even cutting holes in the floor/rear seat pan!
