Hi Bill,
If original and not modified you should find a 12 or 13mm bolt, I think, in the front of and centre of the battery holding a plate that pins the battery down, accessed with a socket extension, maybe two slotted together to give sufficient length.
From your question it sounds as though a Plusgas and or light oil shower may need to be applied and left to soak into the thread in the battery tray to avoid a seizure (of the thread not you).
Don't try and wind it out in one go, ease it our by rotating anti clockwise then clockwise, part of a turn until it frees up.
Hope that helps.
Andy.
If it can happen it will.

Bill,
I can only assume that some one has put a non standard modification in to protect the battery from the weather, being at the very front and apparently exposed, so you are unable to see the fitting.
Just thinking, there is a post at the beginning showing the overheating problem where the copper positive cable enters the lug. The attached picture shows the standard arrangement and you should see that the battery can be lifted straight out once the electrical connections etc., are undone and put aside. Nothing else needs removing.
If you can check that picture out it may solve your conundrum.
Hope that helps.

It's page 7 - Check your Positive Battery lead...........
There is enough there to identify the arrangement

When replacing the battery clamp, smear a load of copper grease on the bolt ;)

They love seizing up and shearing off if you don't..

Several times I've had to remove the remains of a clamp bolt using the 'hot spanner'!

Also, the battery tray loves to rust so whilst the battery is out give it a coat of paint ;)

On my 1999 & 2000 MY HDis, I have to remove the front plastic cover to gain access to the battery clamp
That's the 2 twist-off plastic "caps" and the 2 slot head latches at the back of the ECU cover

Thanks Andrew
I took that plate off earlier as it seemed that must be the access to it and bingo there it was, many thanks anyway.
