I was driving along in 4th gear this afternoon when I noticed that when I turn the steering from left to right the gear lever moves backwards and forwards a little (you can see it move)
I then tried in other gears and it seems to be when in 2nd or 4th gear.
Never noticed this before and I have had the car for 5 years.
Is it just one of those things that you never notice normaly or is there something not right[?]
Gear lever moving?

I've noticed this on occasions, my old 205 diesel did it.
Because the longitudinal movement of the gear lever is transformed into lateral movement through a bell crank affair, any slight movement of the engine and box from side to side will push or pull on the link rod, this movement will be similarly transmitted back to the gear leaver via the bell crank.
Don't forget the engine is a very heavy lump and is subject to centrifugal forces like anything else, the mountings are fairly soft to supress the vibrations an engine produces, so it can and does move.
If this is going on while you are stationary or at very low speed, then yes there is something amiss, possible loose front subframe, though doubtfull.
