4 Life coolant

The above is an excellent alternative to the conventional water and antifreeze mixes. Especially in our cars which are prone to matrix failures due to corrosion. It also has the combustion gas indicator in it. Red to yellow if contaminated.

hhmm interesting, do you have any more info on this stuff? does it contain any water? It sounds a lot like Evanscoolant but doesn't mention running at a lower pressure?

I'd be wary of anything that says its for life, the anti freeze part of it may last for life, but I bet the corrosion inhibitors don't, leaving you with a nice head gasket failure or weeping heater matrix a couple of years down the line...

Having searched on the web, there are a number of companies producing very similar sounding 'long-life' products based on monoethylene glycol. These are supposed to be good for 600k miles with an extender additive - presumably 300k miles without like the 4Life product.
Have a look at Texaco, Shell, Castrol, Havoline etc.
As I was after a monoethylene glycol based coolant, I'll be trying one of these if I can get hold of one.

Ford has a ten year antifreeze- which needs to be changed every three years according to the Ford service schedule!

Dave, have you seen this? Quote from about 3 weeks ago.......
>>New --- and hopefully better.. coolant for car engines??
http://www.evanscooling.com Anyone interested in this product can get it from:-
Automatic Windings LTD
Location: Wimborne, Dorset
Phone: 01-202-872-101
Web: www.automatic-windings.co.uk
No point in looking for it on their website though as they dont even mention that they sell it??? hhmm.. I rang them yesterday, and was asked to ring back today to speak to the gentleman who deals with it, rang twice so far today but no one answered the phone??? Funny way to do business huh..<<
UPDATE:- I have just spoken to the man concerned.. Hmm he only bought a fairly small amount of the stuff, of which he only has 80 litres left, but wants to retain 40 litres for himself. Soo he is willing to sell the other 40 litres*... But.. its very expensive! Bear in mind he had to pay to have it shipped over from the USA etc it worked out that to sell the remaining 40 litres to me including carriage and VAT we are probably talking Around the £300 £400 mark, but he didn't know off the top of his head and is going to ring me later with a far more accurate price..
*He can of course order more from the USA if he gets a big enough demand for it, but he thinks the price puts people off buying the stuff..
Interestingly he sez he drove his car (diesel) with a blown head gasket for 3-4 weeks with this coolant in it and the engine did NOT overheat??? He also sez that his dads car is running on it very well and there are two large Merc vans running on it locally, and doing high mileages with no probs.. [:)]
For more detailed information I suggest you ring him yourselves.. [:)] on.. 01-202-872-101

Hang on a minute- If you replace the coolant with the right stuff every couple of years, the engines last until the cam belt breaks. How long do you think that it will take to find out if the coolant is any better?
Do you propose leaving this stuff in for ever?
If so then what are you going to do when the radiator silts up?
Looks like a mug's game to me!

Thanks James. I have been searching the web for some time now and haven't managed to get any locally yet.
I'm mainly looking for a monoethylene glycol based antifreeze as it is supposed to be less toxic; and in the past with the AX I have dropped a lot on the drive from time to time - not good for the dogs. Even filling and bleeding the system it gets spilt.
If I manage to get any (for a reasnable price) I'll continue to change it at around about the scheduled intervals. Bearing in mind that a two year interval will mean nearly 60k miles in my car whereas in another car it could be less than 10k.

Tom..
(1) >>Do you propose leaving this stuff in for ever?<<
Evans claim you could make it a low pressure sealed system, i.e. that it NEVER needs to be replaced?

(2)>>If so then what are you going to do when the radiator silts up?<<
Evans claim radiators DON'T silt up when using their coolant, not ever..
There are loads of people on their site who claim to have used it successfully for years, including one truck driver claiming to have done 500,000 miles on it, and still going well...
Take a look at Evans website and draw your own conclusions, personaly I think its genuine stuff... With litigation so rife in the USA I don't think they would get away with selling the stuff if it was dodgy, or if their claims for it were untrue..

You are going to wind up replacing the coolant at some time for some reason anyway.
Or does it also protect against thermostat failure, hose failure, accident damage.

Toyota do 2 types of 'for life' coolant, red and green. The red stuff does all of these things, and can be found in many a race car in the uk[:)]. It costs £15 for 5 litres. The green stuff is the same price but has some subtle diffrences. Available from any toyota dealership. Have a look!

Very true Homer, though with a low-lower pressure system the hoses should last longer, and you can always drain the coolant into a can for re-use after changing a thermostat or something. [:)]
I'm not selling the stuff here, [:I] but I am very interested in prolonging the life of my radiator, heater matrix, and possibly save a cracked cylinder head at some point in the future, so if this stuff is as good as it's described then I personaly want some! [:D]

Hi MrBump. The coolant Toyota use appears to contain water, and they recommend changing it at regular intervals.. Evenscoolant doe not contain water, and they claim it does NOT need to be replaced.. So the two are obviously very very different in chemical composition.. Hence the %25 price difference?
