Citroen Relay engine sound

Hi, bought a relay 2011 2,2 hdi to convert into a camper. Has a whining/ whistling sound on acceleration which gets worse higher revs, not always there but comes and goes.

I’m thinking the turbo needs replacing

Any help would be appreciated!

It may not be as catastrophic as that.

All turbos make some noise as they 'spool up', but if it whistling louder, then it could also be caused by the following:- a Turbo Boost, air or vacuum leak, a hose with a split in it, an overboost fault or damage to the compressor wheel.
