The 75th Anniversary of VE Day.

Post by mickthemaverick »

I wanted to start a thread where we, as a forum, can record our celebration of the tremendous day in 1945 when freedom returned to our shores. It is an unfortunate irony that we find ourselves in our current lockdown conditions, which have prevented so many celebratory activities up and down the country. However that is not a reason for us to subdue our celebrations entirely so I think it would be appropriate for us to show what we can do to bring some relief from the lockdown. The idea is for us to prove that we can achieve an apparently outrageous target simply by determination and willpower. The Desert Island Disc thread which Neil started last night at 19.12 had clocked up 52 posts by 19.12 today without any direct target or intention to do so and that gives me the belief that we can do it and thereby demonstrate our collective determination to win. In order to make it a genuine celebration I would ask that all posts are connected to "75" in whatever way you choose, preferably pictorial, and thus we can produce an interesting document for people to read as a reminder of the FCF. (Fantastic Celebratory Forum :-D .)
I, having had prior knowledge of this thread :-D , have sorted out a dozen or so potential posts to keep things moving and I will endeavour to find more during the day. So what better way to get it going than a tribute from the man himself:

So I can now declare the thread open for business and ask for everybody's help in reaching the target of 75 posts by midnight tomorrow!! =D> =D> =D>

What's that glass of suspect looking liquid, I hear no one ask ? Why, it's a French 75, no less. :)

"French 75 is a cocktail made from gin, Champagne, lemon juice, and sugar. It is also called a 75 Cocktail, or in French simply a Soixante Quinze (Seventy Five)"

At number 75 in the Billboard top 100 chart for 1945 we have Woody Herman and Caldonia. Well it was the pop music of the time and maybe jive music was "in", not easy listening but energetic none the less!

Seems like its a more significant song than I first thought
"Caldonia" is a jump blues song, first recorded in 1945 by Louis Jordan and his Tympany Five. A version by Erskine Hawkins, also in 1945, was described by Billboard magazine as "rock and roll", the first time that phrase was used in print to describe any style of music.

Hmmm! A lump of tarmacadam :? Ah! Not just any old tarmacam..... but the one known as THE A75  =D>

"The A75 is a Primary Trunk Road in Scotland, linking Stranraer and its ferry ports at Cairnryan with the A74(M) at Gretna, close to the Border with England and the M6 Motorway."

If in doubt, refer to the periodic table

Rhenium single crystal bar and 1cm3 cube
Alchemist-hp (talk) (www.pse-mendelejew.de) / FAL

"Rhenium is a chemical element with the symbol Re and atomic number 75. It is a silvery-gray, heavy, third-row transition metal in group 7 of the periodic table."
"Nickel-based superalloys of rhenium are used in the combustion chambers, turbine blades, and exhaust nozzles of jet engines. These alloys contain up to 6% rhenium, making jet engine construction the largest single use for the element."
