Diesel lacks power

Unread post by ktaylor21662 »

My Citroen Synergie (1.9 TD, 220k miles) suddenly lacks power.
I assume it is an injector pump problem since it is producing a lot of black smoke.
Anyone had a similar problem and what was your solution; how much did it cost; who fixed the problem; etc.
Surrey, Sussex, West Kent & South London is my immediate area.
Any ideas also gratefully received.
Thanks, Kevin.

Have the injectors seen any cleaner lately - or when were they last serviced - I'd imagine at the mileage you quote they should have been reconned at least once! Have you established if the turbo is still kicking in?

Kevin, any work on an injector pump is usually expensive and frankly they are so reliable that 220k is not necessarily a high mileage for them. As DLM suggests start with the injectors but follow through with fuel filter too.
DLM's query re the turbo. Needs checking out. Pumps, injectors and similar matters tend to creep in an not die or go off suddenly (unless they break!) as you indicate. Go for the turbo not responding which would give overfuelling and black smoke due to poor combustion.
Good luck, from another item on here you still have 700k miles left!

Kevin,
It is right that age/wear related injector/pump faults are rarely sudden.
Two things that could do this suddenly though would be the collapsing and/or blockage of air inlet pipework...or the diesel pump timing going out due to the timing belt jumping a tooth.
I'd look carefully at the inlet side first.

The injector pump compensates for boost, so there should be no smoke if the turbo stops producing boost.

Cheers, for the info on that point Kowalski. Sounds like David could be onto a good point or several.
Good hunting Kevin.
