In this time of the Coronavirus we have been asked to do what we can to support the National Health Service. I agree with this, and will do what I can (I am limiting personal contact, although I am classified as a key worker, as the company I work for maintains IT/EPoS equipment for shops/banks). On Thursday I was one of the myriad applauding the NHS. On Friday I was the only person in earshot out applauding them again. The Royal Berkshire Hospital is just down the road from me, and one young lady, heading home, thanked me.
What upset me is the fact that I was the only person in earshot doing this. Why? Why was I the only person? The NHS is fighting the Coronavirus every second of every minute of every hour of every day. The very least we can do is to show our appreciation for all of their efforts. Is it really too much to ask that we applaud these people for what they are doing? Italy and Spain are doing this, and they have been hit far harder than the UK.
I intend to carry on applauding the NHS at 20:00 every day, for as long as I am able, or until this crisis is over. Please, if you can, will you join me in supporting the NHS?

Re: Supporting the NHS
I had thought last Thursday's applaud the NHS was a one-off event. See that there are now calls for it every Thursday 20h00, or even every day. Perhaps word just hasn't got round?
So important to let health workers know they are hugely valued.

Re: Supporting the NHS
I too applauded on Thursday and last night and will continue to do so. My partner is a Registered Mental Health Nurse and is currently stranded in Cairns in Australia with many other NHS staff also stranded around the world..If any members on here have any influence with private jet owners please lobby them to offer help in getting the staff back here where their services are, and will continue to be, in severe demand. Thanks

Re: Supporting the NHS
I was out again this evening, and, again, I was the only person in earshot applauding the NHS. How can the NHS keep their morale up if we don't show that we appreciate the hard work they are doing to try and save us?

Re: Supporting the NHS
Perhaps all those clapping will, when this is finally all over, support the Doctors (two of my cousins are junior doctors), nurses (my mum was an RMN, my cousin is physio and nurse specialising in Cystic fibrosis patients) and the unseen NHS workers like my brother who's a hospital electrician repurposing unused wards and theatres as Covid-19 wards at the moment.
Perhaps we could force the government to pay them.what they should earn - many of us get far higher salaries and better benefits for doing *far far* less taxing work.
I'm sure you've all seen the video of the Tories in parliament cheering when the Nurses pay raise was voted down a couple of years ago...
Remember that next time you vote...

Re: Supporting the NHS
Some matters of fact recalled, which some parts of the media have picked up on in the last week or so.
However, we have an understanding on the forum that political posts are not allowed, and so we'd ask that the thread doesn't continue in that direction. Sorry about that.

Re: Supporting the NHS
If I, with my evening applause, make just one NHS doctor or nurse feel that they are appreciated it will be worth it.

Re: Supporting the NHS
The NHS are bloody brilliant. As you know, Mrs. Michel was diagnosed with cancer early in Feb. Her surgery was scheduled for 30th March. She had a call on the 18th saying "we've a cancellation. Your surgery is tomorrow. Be here at 11am"..Hell Razor5543 wrote: 29 Mar 2020, 07:38 If I, with my evening applause, make just one NHS doctor or nurse feel that they are appreciated it will be worth it.
So, she had it done, just needs a bit of radiotherapy now and she'll be fine. Utterly outstanding service and treatment.
I'd prefer they were properly renumerated for their efforts though, not clapped.

Re: Supporting the NHS
I'm pleased to say that I observed 6 households giving applause this evening and I do feel that there is a genuine gratefulness expressed in their action. Some may say that the workers deserve better remuneration for their work and I would not argue with that but I can assure you that my partner and all her colleagues would continue their work for no money at all, because they do it for their love of fellow humanity. Nursing has long been described as vocational rather than professional and it is indeed a vocation which our doctors and nurses practice with absolute professionalism and as such they appreciate our thanks more than their wage packets!!
