ZX Knocking noise from NS Front

Post by taylors »

Hi anyone experience noise from front nearside when accelerating on left hand corners, ie turning out of side streets or roundabouts.
Changed Near side drive shaft, problem still there?.....replaced both wishbones and track rod ends, problem still there?......thinking that the first replacement driveshaft may have been a Friday afternoon job, bit the bullet and fitted another complete driveshaft, but problem still persists.........Whilst I really like this car, I've travelled 12000 miles in 8 months, it is coming very close to having the first driveshaft, now removed, rammed through the front windscreen!!.......Help.

I changed both driveshafts on mine...why concentrate on the NS driveshaft? Probably the OS one is causing the problem.
Mine drove loads better with both changed.

Thanks, maybe I'll change that next, but the noise does seem to come from the NSF......other suggestions seem to point to diff problems.

I have either or the same problem on my ZX TD. As yu pull away up hill or around an island you get this thumping or knocking sound from under neath the car not very loud but there. I thought it may be the drive shafts but 3 that's 3 citroen garages have had alook and found nothing at all. One of the gargages was a main dealer and they got it up on the ramps and checked both drive shafts, drop links, ball joints, wheel bearings, suspension bushes, steering rack and every thing eles including the exhust for NO COST!!! nearly fell over but as the man said " it's a free saftey check" the other two independant Citroen specialists again nothing. Funny thing it it only dose it when pulling away and then only up to about 2500 revs. I have noticed how ever that if I dip the clutch for a moment the noise stop's but this is hard to do when your pulling away up hil, Chcked the gear box oil and it was very dark but not black and a little low so topped it up, no difference.[?]

Thanks for all your suggestions, thought I was going a bit crazy, must be a feature rather than a fault

You should change it - it should not be vary dark. Wonder if you have a chipped tooth on one of the bevel pinions in the diff? Your dealer will probably not have checked for this.

Thanks guys. Been to a gearbox repair an recon center today on one of the near by industrial estates. Told them the story so far and left the car with them. Two hours latter phone rang "your cars ready" Guess what that's right, they could find nothing wrong with the box. They gave me a report of work done. Up hill, down hill, rolling road, listening for gearbox noise all the stuff you'd expect. While they conceeded that there is a noise / clunking they said "put you cheque book away as it ain't the box" Good news for me and my wallet then. How ever they also said that the drive shafts seemed OK but they couldnt be sure. So on another web site I posed the same question and got the same sort of answers as on here but one of them came from an MOT inspector who assurd me that the ZX drive shaft can be noisey in a straight line and then only in the lower gears. So I am picking up a pair on the weekend, second hand but the cars only got to get me to about September then its a new Citroen for me. Possibly a Xsara VTS this time . I'll let you know how I get on. [:)]
