Just a couple of quick questions.......
I need to drop the rear end of my ZX 1.9TD estate's exhaust system to do the subframe mounts. What is the best way? Is there a secret to either unhooking the rubber mounts or undoing the clamp bolt between the rear box and the middle section? (on mine the clamp bolt is facing upwards and getting a spanner onto it is fine but it fouls on various bits so you can't actualy turn it and it's probably seized anyway!)
I also need to remove the rear drums to check the shoes and self adjuster (long brake pedal travel problem). Haynes manual says that you have to remove the rear axle nut (what is the size as you can't see it until you remove/destroy the cover?) and the whole bearing bit. Is this true? There is a small crosshead screw which seems to hold the drum onto the axle as per usual. I removed this but the drum did not come off and I didn't want to force it. So do I need to get the whole lot of hub nuts and covers, and possibly rear bearings as well just to take the drums off? Or should I just take it to some quick fit outfit and get them to try..... silly question!

You can adjust the rear brakes without removing the drums. If you jack up the rear of the car and remove one of the wheel bolts, you can rotate the wheel so you can see the adjuster through the hole.
Then you can wind the adjuster with a small screwdriver until the shoes are just rubbing on the drum. One side has a reverse thread, watch out for this.
I've just done this (yesterday) on my ZX after I fitted new shoes. Took about 15 minutes each side, and the brakes are now excellent.

Estate drum brakes are different to the hatch's, on the estate the drums will come off after the securing screw is removed, (don't mess with the hub bearings its not necessary) if they are loose but wont come off its because the shoes have worn into the drums and have created a lip that is holding the drum against the shoes.
You need to wind the adjuster backwards in order to retract the shoes to a level below the lip, the drum will then come off.
Doing this is a bit tricky, you must hold the ratchet mechanism away from the ratchet wheel so it can be turned in the opposit direction, this will be made easier if the brake pedal is pressed as it takes the spring load off the wheel and it thread, the handbrake must be off or the task will be impossible.
The exhaust rubbers are buggers if you don't lube them, blast some liquid detergent around them and they will slide off easily, the exhaust will need to be suported on a block of wood or something, there isnt the scope of movement in manifold to pipe joint to allow it to rest on the floor, doing so will strain it.
