406 HDi 110 - any good?

Post by lhm_leak »

Having been just a little slow off the mark today, I missed out on a '00 Xantia HDi 110 that I wanted by 2 hours. Having a look around some of the other cars on this dealer's forecourt though, I spotted a '99 (V reg) 406 GLX in the corner. A quick enquiry revealed that it was an HDi 110 with 57K miles. I didn't go any further than getting the keys and looking inside, starting the engine, that sort of thing - mainly because I know very little about these cars and don't know where to start looking for potential trouble.
I told the dealer I'd think about it - superficially it's quite a nice car with a healthy sounding engine, certainly one that I could live with. So my questions really are: What's likely to go wrong? What do I need to look out for? And is nearly 6 grand a fair sticker price in reality - and how much can I bargain it down?
Any advice gratefully received!
Stu.
