Zx Battery Problem ? Or What

Post by welshy »

Hello
Driving to work this morning in my trusty old ZX Td, and all of a sudden the battery light on the dashboard started to flicker on and off, and during this the power steering started to fail
(three men to turn the steering wheel)senario.
Quite frightning when your driving down the motorway.
Never had this problem before and its a fairly new battery ( 8 month).
although i have not had the battery checked , could anyone point to any other problems this might be ?.
Ps
Could a fan belt that is slipping Cause this ?

I would guess you have lost your alternator belt. It probably does the power steering pump as well.

Might even be the pulley on your power steering pump has sheared off, and the alternator belt will have gone down the road with it.
The pump pulley went on my Xsara went at about 100K miles.

Hi,
Sounds to me like the adjustment has slipped or the belt has stretched to the point where it doesn't always turn the steering pump and alternator pulleys.
Hopefully you can just retension it, but if it's old, it's time to replace it.
cheers
