xantia brake bleed screw - where?

Unread post by heyoucmere »

[:I][:I]Xantia 1.9TD 1994 This is probably the daftest request - but I cannot find the brake bleed screw on the front calipers! is it behind the rubber cover that the hydraulic line goes into? I've read elsewhere that they are prone to shearing off too - what happens then?
I managed to drift out that wee bolt at the front of the caliper (after the pin came out tooo easily) - are the calipers supposed to swivel up and outof the way at that point? They don't seem to want to.
The reason for my post is that I have binding front brakes -and want to change the pads and coppaslip the innards. PLEASE! I'm sorry to be a dolt - but I'd really appreciate a complete idiots guide to this - I've got Haynes - but the picture looks nothing like my brakes!
One last thing - On hard acceleration (and my Xantia seems pretty sedate) there is no exhaust smoke at all; all other diesels I've owned usually reward with clouds of the stuff when accelerating hard. Any ideas? All replies from you expert people will be much appreciated - thanks for you patience!!!

The bleed srew is sort of behind and under where the hydraulic line enters the caliper. I haven't bled a set, so I am not sure HOW you are supposed to get on it!
Yes, the caliper will swivel upwards, but it might need a bit of persuasion[}:)] - particularly if you have a lip on brake disc, or the caliper is sticking.

It's been a while since your post but if you haven't done it yet, only the inner part of the caliper that holds the pads swivels up. Even if you have a big lip on your disks (as I have) the pads will stay in place (you prise them out out after lifting the caliper) and the movable part should swing freely (perhaps after an initial help with a carefuly placed screwdriver). The caliper piston then has to be 'wound' in clockwise to get the caliper to open up for the larger new pads.
