2006 307 1.6 hdi starts, cuts out after few seconds.

Post by abergreg »

Hi, had a 307 2.0 HDI 90 for for five years without issue. I now have 307 1.6 hdi that started to cut out & then wouldnt start. Diagnosed as u/s tank sender which was changed. Now car will turn over & fire for a few seconds & then cut out. If I hold it at 2000 rpm or above it will run, as soon as I take my foot off it cuts out. Code was p0088, real time graph shows pressure exceed max. I have renewed the fuel filter, fuel pressure sensor & fuel pressure regulator, same problem, same reading. I suspect pressure sensor wiring/signal but I'm poor at the electrical stuff. Any suggestions would be a huge help. Obviously cant move the car.

You'll need to post your VIN first of all (automatically masked from public view) so we can determine exact engine ECU and specifics.

Hi Marc, I have done all I can but it still keeps cutting out after a few seconds. Pressure immediately exceeds 1900 bar and I guess the ECU shuts it down? after renewing the pressure sensor, fuel filter and pressure regulator the code is now p1166 which I think is the same fault. My problem is that I dont know how to isolate the underlying fault. The fuel return line is working properly I have checked at the sender. I can only guess that the FPS is sending a false reading, maybe the signal wire is shorting to reference or ground.

Hi 'Greg'?

So P0088: High pressure fuel regulation: The measured rail pressure is too high in relation to the set point.
  • For an engine speed below 800 rpm, the difference between the measured rail pressure and the reference value of the fuel flow regulator is 350 bars for 800 milliseconds.
  • For an engine speed between 1000 and 2500 rpm, the difference between the measured rail pressure and the reference value of the fuel flow regulator is 250 bars for 800 milliseconds.
  • For an engine speed above 2500 rpm, the difference between the measured rail pressure and the reference value of the fuel flow regulator is 200 bars for 800 milliseconds.
Conditions for Disappearance of the Fault: Driving for 5 minutes with several full load accelerations for 10 seconds.

Down Grade Modes Present: Whilst the fault is showing the Management Information Lamp on the dash will be lit and the following will apply:
  • Cut in the exhaust heat recovery function
  • Irreversible cutting of the cruise control
  • Deactivation of automatic mode for the electronic parking brake
  • The ECU limits the fuel flow
  • Deactivation of the forced regeneration of the particle emission filter
Symptoms Noticed:
  • Jerking/stalling
  • Unwanted acceleration
  • Noise
  • Smoke from the exhaust
  • Lack of power
  • Starting problem
Suspect Areas:
  • Engine ECU (Software not up to date)
  • Poor fuel or polluted fuel (petrol, deposit, etc.)
  • Problem on the fuel low or high-speed circuit (hose, tank, diesel fuel filter, etc.)
  • Fuel injectors
  • high pressure fuel pump
  • Electrical harness
  • Connectors
  • Engine fuse box
  • Fuel high pressure sensor
I know there are a lot of possibilities - but such is the case with fuelling faults.

Ok, so it's now saying the fuel rail pressure is higher than the maximum pressure!

I've listed the fault description below, but I do know there was a technical service bulletin issued for other DV 1.6 engines that referred to the BSM (Engine Fusebox). I would check this out and carefully examine all the fuses and the general area - if there are signs of any black carbon that may be your culprit.

That won't cost anything to check out except a dry day (unlikely in Wales), but may rule that out. If it does look blackened under or around the relays, then a replacement BSM may be worth a shot.

Pressure of the fuel high pressure common injection rail measured higher than the maximum pressure (for 5 seconds).

Down Grade Modes:
  • Engine stopped
  • Irreversible cutting of the cruise control
  • Deactivation of automatic mode for the electronic parking brake
  • Deactivation of the speed limiter
Symptoms:
  • Lack of power
  • Stalling
Suspect Areas:
  • Electrical harness
  • Connectors
  • High pressure fuel pump
  • Fuel flow regulator
  • Low pressure fuel circuit
  • Fuel filter
  • Engine ECU
  • High pressure fuel sensor

Hi Marc, (yes its Greg!)
Thanks for the info. I have checked the BSM and cleaned all the contacts on it and the ECU multi connectors. I did find a recall for slightly later models that related to the BSI fusebox and some issue with overheated relays. I will check them all again tomorrow. Its been off the road for three months now and when you've had a couple of Nissans for over 15 years previously without so much as a squeak I think I might be put off for life.
