Hi Sip

There could be several reasons - the installation media was corrupt, or your HDD is shot.
During installation, it can take an hour to upgrade and the system will reboot one or more times. If you have removed the media, or interrupted the upgrade it can brick the unit.

Did you use a CD or a USB?
Can you post your VIN so I can determine the exact unit you have.

Thanks for reply, I use CD, the flashing tool run for about 10 minutes, after this, the screen shut down. I 'll wait an hour and nothing change. Then i switch off the ignition

Can i manually install update on the hard disc or back to old os?

1) Did you use a genuine dealer software CD update? Using a copy can brick the unit as there is copy protection on these. A genuine dealer CD is always recommended for this reason.

2) The engine must be running always during an update - leaving the ignition on won't work because 'Economy Mode' will kick in and that will corrupt the upgrade.

3) If the HDD has too many bad sectors, the allocated space for re-mapping these can fill - when this happens, they become non-recoverable errors.

4) Any of the above could affect the upgrade process and the boot loader info may now be corrupt at this point.

So your options as I see it are to get a genuine dealer CD (should only cost a few Euros) first of all. Then try and get either a replacement automotive hard disk (MUST be PATA / IDE - not SSD or SATA) as these are too new for the architecture and they are not compatible with the IDE command set used by the Unix based Operating System. The original hard disk was 30Gb. A larger one is OK, but you will lose the additional capacity as the upgrade CD will create the partitions according to pre-defined parameters.

Failing that, you might consider getting a CF card (which uses the IDE command set) and a CF to IDE adaptor card (ensure change the HDD is set to SLAVE as the CD is the Primary).

Format as FAT32 (do NOT use a MAC or an Apple system to format). Boot with the dealer CD in and is should recreate the partitions and install.

ok, I'll start by checking the hard disk and try to format it. if there is no badsector, the radio will accept a new CD? now cdrom gives no sign of life

During the upgrade process, it's not just the software on the hard drive that is updated, it also updates the firmware in the hardware chips - and this is where the system code is stored when it boots up. This is why it is so important to make sure you have the correct media, and do not allow interruptions.

Obviously I can't tell you what has happened in your specific case, but it could be that the EEPROM has not been programmed correctly during the update or was interrupted - or the HDD system files are corrupt.

PSA actually warn that using an incorrect firmware CD on the RT4, 5 & 6 can make the system irrecoverable.

At this stage, we don't know if it is the hardware that is toast or the HDD. So you can either try and replace the hard drive and see if it will boot off the dealer CD and recreate the partitions or send it off for repair. (Autronics in Spain do RT* repairs). Some specialist companies have the correct software to 'reanimate' the unite by manually forcing a code update using a cable connection to the chip and the correct software - but that is something we can't help with of course.

Before you try all that though, you can try removing power from the unit (always disconnect the quad lock connector first as this contains the power), leave it for 15 minutes, then reconnect it up with the dealer CD in. But if it won't even start the CD (i.e. the CD doesn't make a noise / power on or any attempt to read the disk) then this implies that the system is not booting and not telling the CD to power up, so replacing the hard disk may make no difference. Have a listen when the power is restored - can you hear the CD spin up?

One other possible solution is on the underside of the RT4, there are 2 white buttons (best to remove the RT4 and look at these to familiarise yourself with their location). Then when you know where they are, ensure the CD is in the drive, connect the cables back (power last), then hold the 2 white buttons in and start the car. Keep the buttons held in for at least a minute then let go and see if it boots. This should force boot the unit off the CD (assuming the CD will work of course).

The hard disk is ok, no bad sectors.
I remove power from radio for an hour, at this time i check and clean disk. After i connect battery and cables. White buttons and dark reset do not make any change. The CD do not try to start.

So, only way is to send radio to repair EEPROM?

I think so - the programming has not gone correctly during the update and the firmware on the chip is corrupt so it won't load the Operating System.
