Citroen Relay Starter issues

Unread post by LittleOldSuzi »

Our 2014 Relay has been having Starter Motor issues but I am not sure it is the motor. Abbreviated version:

In the summer the earth strap from the gearbox to the chassis leg played up but removing, cleaning and replacing solved it fine. Recently when it is warm it occasionally (once a week) has had an issue where it will start the turn the engine and then the solenoid would drop out and the motor would still be whizzing round but not engaged to the flywheel anymore.

Boxing day and it refuses to even try, not a click. Checked the solenoid and found only 5v with the key fully turned. My first thought was the earth strap again so ran a jump lead from the negative on the battery to the engine/gearbox but no joy.

I then used the positive jump lead and a piece of 1.5mm cable to touch the solenoid and the starter fired up without hesitation. The van had decided to not start in 2 inches of mud so I turned the key on and repeated and the engine started first time. Dropped it off the jack and moved it somewhere without mud.

My problem is it now starts every time and I haven't actually done anything to fix it??? Perhaps it is the earth strap again and I didn't get a good connection first time with the jump lead? D004 a 12 pin connector in the bay has the solenoid 12v through it so that is a maybe. Anyone know where it is on a 2.2?

I m a bit stuck here, I can't see it being the motor because it went fist time when I touched the jump lead to it but if it needs a starter I will change it. Any idea peeps....

" I then used the positive jump lead and a piece of 1.5mm cable to touch the solenoid and the starter fired up without hesitation. "

That is the best clue.

The solenoid is usually fed direct from the IGN switch on many PSA cars, with no intermediate relay (no pun intended).

IGN sw (starter) contacts can get arc'd and dirty over years of use, and fail to deliver proper power to the solenoid. Your test by-passed the switch contacts.

Marc may be able to post the relevant electrical circuit diagram for the car (we'll need your VIN number for this), to confirm the above.

One work-round is to simply install a 12v 30/40amp standard automotive relay in the cable running from IGN sw to solenoid, to remove the solenoid load (which can be 25amp!) from the IGN switch. This usually restores proper operation, without the awkward job of removing/replacing the IGN switch.
