xsara picasso - engine fuse unit mystery cartridge

Hi there,

In the engine fuse box is a 'thingy' with a bar code on it. What is it for?
It looks a bit like the old cartridges that plug in into game machines ... see photo.

I can't find reference to it anywhere. Is it the BSI?

No that is the BSM or engine fuse box. The BSI is the master computer, and that module is usually in the passenger glove box area, which also holds all the fuses in too.

It's a bit more than a fuse box, as it has chips and relays in it that control various functions. That bit is not shown as separate part, so I don't think it's plug in. I wouldn't try and remove it anyway! Have you got an issue with it?

The BSM or Boîtier de Servitude Moteur basically distributes the vehicles power to the various systems and includes a lot relays and electronics. It has no user serviceable parts and also works in a slave relationship to the BSI.

The BSM is the complete module, not just that 'cartridge'.

Yes, I do have an issue with the car (see related post viewtopic.php?t=64136 ) so I'll add to that one to explain it (rather than here).

Maybe you can answer a question on the Engine Fault light generally.

Sometimes it goes off on its own, and sometimes has to be cleared via the OBD.
Does that mean anything about the fault it's responding to?

If the fault goes away does it wait 100 miles and then turn off the light or something?

The engine management light may or may not be put on - depending on the fault. Certain faults are triggered depending on the circumstances and may be temporary or permanent. Permanent faults will stay on with a fault recorded on the engine management ECU or the BSI until the underlying issues are rectified. Temporary faults may 'self-clear' once the individual conditions are met to do this. These are intermittent faults.

Clearing any fault code with a code reader means diddly squat, - if the cause is still there, as it will simply get triggered again once the conditions are met.

So if you have the engine management light on, then it will for sure have triggered a fault code and this is what we will need to help further troubleshoot.

As you've put a link to your other thread, I'll take a look at this as I see you have put some codes there and your VIN. Youll have to bear with me as I'm awaiting the windscreen replacement company to come out and replace the C3 windscreen after a large split from the corner to the centre - probably pothole damage.
