Xantia cooling yet again

Are the cooling fans supposed to run all the time the engine is running, even from cold? Both my fans seem to be spinning all the time. They don't run until the engine is actually started but both seem to be in the half speed mode as soon as I spin her up.[?]

No, they shouldnt - either the sender is s/c (unplug it and see if fan stops) or the relay contacts are welded together, if it has one

Ah, but if air con is fitted, then fans run at half speed all the time air con is switched on. If they don't stop when the air con is switched off, then the Bitron air-con controller is looking suspect.

Arghh, if I didn't like this car so much I'd hate it. It has air con and three fan relays, all of which appear to be fine. Ah well, that's three reasons to remove the front bumper, fog lights, bitron unit and headlamp washers. Any advice on facelift bumber removal gratefully received.
