C5 Intermittent blower motor (not motor or resistor)

So since the Summer, my blower motor has had issues (the usual symptom of blades going blank after a few seconds), however, it would be extremely intermittent. E.g. it's worked for weeks at a time, as well as not working for weeks as well.
Typically when I had it in at the garage for some other work, I asked them to take a look, however, it started working just before taking it in and then stopped again shortly after bringing it back, and thus they couldn't really check what was wrong.

I thought it would be the resistor, but bought one off amazon, replaced it and no change. So, later on, ordered a blower motor, which arrived with the retaining clip broken off, so I sent that back. However, did have a sneaky check of plugging it in and seeing if it'd fix the issue, it did not.

Last weekend whilst it was working, I decided to clean and reconnect the earthing points in the left-hand side footwell, and it seemingly carried on working for a day or two there.

I've bought a few tools over the past couple of weeks to try to help diagnose the issue, one of the tone generators and receivers to trace cables/breakages, which helped me at least trace where the cables went etc.

So, with my trusty multimeter, I measured the voltage on the 2 pin connector at the resistor with the car on, the voltage on the red cable there is ~0.3V, if I have the plastic off on the resistor, and measure the voltage on the red output connector is the same, so seems like the resistor is not getting 12+V. At the fuse, there is the 12V.

Any ideas on where to look next? I tried having the stereo out to see if I could if the 2pin connector ran into the back of the climate control, but couldn't see it.
Currently, I have the original blower and original resistor in (rather than the new one).

So I spent a bit more time trying to figure this out tonight, with taking a bunch of the dash bits off so I could visually follow cables etc.

I soldered a wire to the back of the amazon purchased resistor pack, so I could get the tone generator on the red cable, the problem is, it seems to think there's a continual circuit to ground now (not due to my poor soldering - I checked), so it won't send the tone so I can't follow to find where the break is in the cable.

However, I've found a connector for the cable I need to check that comes from the engine bay beside the drivers' footwell. Does anyone know how these connectors come apart? hopefully then I can get to the bottom of the issue Though the image looks like this is easy to reach the picture is taken from the steering column, so not easy to get a hold of.
