The automatic handbrake functions are controlled by the ESP ECU. Any fault with this system and it will cut off things like Hill Start Assist, Automatic release etc. You need to get it read with Diagbox and put any codes up here. The same goes for cruise control - if there is an issue with the ESP system that too will be disabled.

What is your VIN so we know what system you have?

You have electronic motors on the calipers on this vehicle, but be aware that the system looks at the gradient (uphill / downhill) and angle of direction when moving, as well as the amount of torque (a threshold which must be exceeded) for it to release.

So probably just a glitch.
