TPMS

Post by KennyW »

Hi All,

Both front tyre monitors are not displaying pressure values. Both sensors are transmitting just checked at local tyre centre.

I suspect the rims have been swapped over.

How do you change them on Diagbox.

Thoughts please

Are the tyres unidirectional? If not just get the wheels swapped left to right at the front.

No, if they're NOT unidirectional then you CAN swap them left to right. Not the other way round.

You'll need a TPMS exciter, as well as a Diagbox, to reprogram the car for the wheels to be in a different position.

Another option is a proper tyre depot. Places such as Costco have a device which plugs into the EOBD which they use to reprogram TPMS after changing tyres. They then don't need to be careful about making sure that wheels go back on the same hub they came off.

Hardly digging. It's a pukka machine that's available for those willing to pay for it. Actually machines as there is more than one make and level of sophistication. Worked a treat on my X7 when I had new tyres fitted last year.

Thanks Paul ,
There is a Costco at Loanhead just south of Edinburgh. I don't know if I can use them because I'm NOT a member anymore.

Could there be anywhere else that could do this apart from the stealers ?

Nowadays Kenny you can walk into Costco, go to customer service and join up for I believe a £10 fee which you will get back in no time just by buying your loo rolls there let alone anything else. Worth checking out rather than just dismissing!! :)

Has it been like this since you got it, or new behaviour? Got to be worth an experiment to swap the front wheels, even if that's just temporary to prove a point. I think you can get the exciters for not too much money if required. What year is it - before a certain age they are not mandatory and you can turn them off - I did it on crapday's X7.

Mike, Thanks for that but Swmbo would love to have a card for Costco again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Richard, The problem started I Feb after minor mishap. I bought a 2nd wheel rim and placed on car after fitting of new tyres. I believe the wheels were swapped over thus causing the problem.I didn't realise the problem until later.
Unfortunately the tyres are not unidirectional so a permenant swap will cause problems. As an experiment to check the sensors I will do a quick swap and test drive when it drys up.

Obviously they have to have a tyre fitting facility. I'm not sure if every Costco does.

Maybe the ATS and National Tyre type places?

Did you swap the TPMS valve over from your old wheel? If not you'll definitely need to get the valve re-paired.
KennyW wrote: 08 Dec 2019, 10:33Unfortunately the tyres are not unidirectional so a permanent swap will cause problems.
No, no, no, that's still the wrong way of thinking about it. Unidirectional tyres should only be fitted to the side of the car to match the rotation mark on the side of the tyre. It's only if you HAVE unidirectional tyres that there would be a problem putting a RH one on the LH side. In reality you're highly unlikely to have unidirectional tyres as these are a high performance choice and expensive.

Unidirectional means they have a rotation arrow on them, if they are not then they can go either way...

If you fitted a different rim, then that would need to be paired (unless you swapped the valve and sensor over as well?), if you swap the wheels over the original wheel should start working again.

MOT check for TPMS is only post 2012 so yours is not a fail.

Providing the car's not showing a warning light. An alternative would be to use Diagbox to tell the car that there's no TPMS fitted. It's what I did to my 2003 Mk1 C5.
